Sunday, November 19, 6 p.m.
The Redstone Room, 129 Main Street, Davenport IA
Drawing from a repertoire featuring a wide array of standards and originals, The Bob Washut Trio – composed of pianist Washut, bass player Alex Pershounin, and drummer Eric Thompson – plays Davenport's Redstone Room as the latest guests in Polyrhythms' monthly “Third Sunday Jazz Workshop & Matinée Series.”
Washut has been a professor of jazz studies at the University of Northern Iowa since 1980, and has recorded 11 CDs (two of which earned five-star ratings from DownBeat magazine), toured Europe three times, and received three “Outstanding Performance” citations in DownBeat's annual Student Music Awards. He was inducted into the Des Moines Jazz Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Iowa Jazz Educators Hall of Fame in 2003.
Pershounin has performed extensively throughout Europe and United States, and has been featured as a performer and composer during such internationally recognized music events as Switzerland's Montreaux Jazz Festival, Finland's Pori Jazz Festival, and Europe’s Jazz Contest in Belgium. His performing credits boast appearances with artists including Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Ray Charles, and he has taught jazz studies and bass studio at Minnesota State University Moorhead, Westfield State College, and various music institutions in Russia.
Thompson, meanwhile, has performed with such greats as Joe Lovano George Garzone, Danilo Perez, John McNeil, and Carmen Bradford, and is the leader of his own band Eric Thompson’s Fun-Time Music Hour. The drummer also arranges and consults with multiple marching bands and drum corps nationwide, and regularly holds master classes as a part of his new business “Thompson’s Drum Pad.”
Polyrhythms' 6 p.m. concert will be preceded by a 3 p.m. “Jazz Demystifying” workshop; tickets are $10-15 for the evening performance, with the workshop $5 for adults and free for students.
