Two hit CDs from last year are getting the expanded "deluxe edition" reissue treatment this Tuesday. Warner Bros. Records hopes customers come 'round a second time for the Goo Goo Dolls' Let Love In, now featuring a bonus live DVD and acoustic versions of "Better Days" and "We'll Be Here (When You're Gone)." An avalanche of goodies makes Beck's The Information three-disc reissue worth spending time with, featuring tracks only found as international B sides; a CD of remixes by Bumblebeez, Jamie Lidell, and David Andrew Sitek of TV on the Radio; and a DVD of all Beck's homemade videos for the album, as well as Michel Gondry's video for "Cell Phone's Dead."
Speaking of reissues and DVDs, next week brings a new look at D.A. Pennebaker's groundbreaking film Bob Dylan: Don't Look Back from 1967. Docurama's two-DVD set contains a new digital transfer of the original film with audio commentary, as well as a new hour-long 65 Tour Revisited documentary, a reproduction of the original 168-page Don't Look Back companion book from 1968, and an alternative version of what is considered by many to be rock's first conceptual music "video": the cue-card-turning "Subterranean Homesick Blues" (which is also encapsulated in a special frame-by-frame "flip book" in the box set).
New-wavers and 1980s-college-radio geeks get a tasty time-machine treat next week, as the Wounded Bird Records imprint releases fist-time CD issues of long out-of-print albums by the Red Rockers and Translator. Featuring a cover of the Barry McGuire hit "Eve of Destruction," the Red Rockers' Schizophrenic Circus from 1984 adds a few bonus tracks, as do the label's reissues of four Translator albums: Heartbeats & Triggers from 1982, No Time Like Now from 1983, Translator from 1985, and Evening of the Harvest from 1986.
Some folks love anything with a certain instrument, such as a Mellotron, Theremin, or Hammond B-3 organ. If the sound of human ecstasy helps you find the beat, then two new compilations just released from Germany's Normal Records bring new meaning to "aural pornography." The pant-and-grind series is titled Heavy Breathing, and the newest volumes (three and four, respectively subtitled Sampled Lust, Electronic Orgasms, Digital Porn and Disco Extravaganza, House Tunes, Ecstatic Techno) continue the search beyond Prince, Donna Summer, and Serge Gainsbourg for songs that incorporate human pleasure as an audio element. The new discs include Basement Jaxx, Chris & Cosey, James White & the Blacks, Twink, Montana Sextet, and Bam Bam.
