Strong pitching, opportunistic offense propel Cedar Rapids to series-opening 5-2 win
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (September 9, 2015) - Cedar Rapids starter Felix Jorge pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits, striking out seven batters and walking one, and Quad Cities River Bandits errors factored into two Kernels run-scoring rallies in the home team's 5-2 win in Game 1 of the Western Division Semifinal at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium Wednesday night.
Jorge (1-0) struck out three of the first five batters he faced, but he also allowed one baserunner in each of the first three innings. Quad Cities put at least one runner on base in seven of the eight innings Jorge started, with the only 1-2-3 inning coming in the seventh.
For the River Bandits, Joshua James (0-1) allowed runners on second and third bases with one out in the first inning, before striking out third baseman T.J. White and getting designated hitter Alex Real to ground out to end the inning. In the second inning, James issued a leadoff walk to center fielder LaMonte Wade before getting three flyouts to keep the game scoreless.
In the third inning, however, James began by walking second baseman Rafael Valera, and shortstop Nick Gordon singled to left field. Right fielder Edgar Corcino's ensuing fly ball sent left fielder Drew Ferguson into the left-field corner for a sliding catch, and he relayed the ball to second baseman Luis Reynoso, who threw to first baseman Ryan Bottger in time to double off Gordon. With two outs and Valera at second base, White singled to left field and went to second base when Ferguson's throw home bounced past catcher Garrett Stubbs. In a scoreless game with two outs and two runners in scoring position, Real lined a single to left-center field that scored both runs for a 2-0 lead.
Quad Cities answered in the top of the fourth inning, opening with back-to-back singles by designated hitter Bryan Muñiz and right fielder Ramon Laureano. Catcher Garrett Stubbs bunted both runners into scoring position, and Bottger drove in Muñiz with the sacrifice fly to right field, and Laureano tagged up and advanced to third base. Shortstop Kristian Trompiz beat Gordon's throw on a two-out infield chopper that scored Laureano to tie the game, 2-2. Before throwing another pitch, Jorge picked off Trompiz at first base to end the inning.
In a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, Kernels catcher Brian Navarreto hit a sharp one-out ground ball to third baseman Nick Tanielu for an infield single, and Valera doubled down the third-base line to put two runners in scoring position. Gordon's sacrifice fly to left field scored Navarreto, and when Tanielu cut off Ferguson's throw and overthrew second base, Valera tried to advance, but  Laureano threw out Valera at third base to end the inning. After that, the closest Quad Cities came to a tie was in the fifth inning, when Ferguson and Tanielu hit two-out singles to put the tying run at third base, before Muñiz's inning-ending groundout to first base.
In the sixth inning, the Kernels got a one-out single by first baseman Chris Paul against River Bandits reliever Andrew Thome, who threw a wild pitch to Navarreto, advancing Paul to second base. A groundout and second wild pitch scored Paul to make it 4-2. The Kernels got their final run in the seventh inning, as Gordon doubled to left field, and when Laureano caught a fly ball in right field, Gordon went to third base and scored when Laureano's throw went into the third-base dugout. The River Bandits had the tying run at the plate in the eighth inning, with two baserunners and one out, but right-hander Luke Bard got Laureano to fly out to right field and Stubbs to pop out to Gordon to end the inning. Right-hander Nick Anderson pitched a scoreless ninth inning, inducing a game-ending double play for the save.
The best-of-three series shifts to Modern Woodmen Park for Game 2 at 7 p.m. Thursday, when the River Bandits must win to continue their season. River Bandits right-hander Brock Dykxhoorn (8-5, 3.88) is scheduled to face Kernels right-hander Sam Gibbons (7-4, 2.89).

River Bandits righty wins award for second straight week - first player in MWL to do so in five years
DAVENPORT, Iowa (September 8, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Dean Deetz has been named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for his performance during the week of Aug. 31- Sept.7, the Midwest League announced on Tuesday.
The second straight award for Deetz, 21, marks the fourth time a River Bandit has won Midwest League Pitcher of the Week honors this season, following right-handers Angel Heredia and David Paulino, who won the award back-to-back for June 29-July 5 and July 6-12, respectively. Quad Cities last had four awards for Pitcher of the Week in the same season in 2007 when Elvis Hernandez (April 5-12), P.J. Walters (May 7-14), Tyler Herron (June 5-July 2), and Michael Schellinger (July 16-23) took home the award.
Following infielder Mott Hyde, who was the Midwest League Player of the Week for April 27-May 3, Heredia, Paulino and Deetz (twice) give the River Bandits five Midwest League weekly award winners this season. Quad Cities last won five weekly awards in 2007, when on top of Hernandez, Walters, Herron, and Schellinger winning Pitcher of the Week, Steve Hill was the Player of the Week for July 23-30.
Deetz won the award for his starts on Aug.31 at Burlington and Sept. 5 at Beloit, combining for 11 innings of shutout, four-hit baseball. The right-hander struck out three batters and walked two in his two starts in the week, and extended his scoreless-inning streak to 22 1/3 innings, dating back to Aug. 19 against Wisconsin. Deetz was Pitcher of the Month in August for Quad Cities, which posted a 2.65 team ERA in the regular season - best in the Midwest League and in the 56-year franchise history for the Quad Cities Midwest League franchise.
In seven games since joining the River Bandits from Short Season Class-A Tri-City July 29, Deetz has started six games and is 5-1 with a 0.76 ERA, 29 strikeouts, and 13 walks while allowing 17 hits in 35 1/3 innings. In his second season pitching in the Houston Astros organization, Deetz is 9-3 with a 1.70 ERA in 63 2/3 innings with 50 strikeouts and 23 walks, a .169 opponents' average and 0.97 WHIP.
A native of Nixa, Mo., Deetz was drafted by the Astros in the 11th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.
Deetz is the first River Bandit to win a weekly award twice in one season since Oscar Taveras was Player of the Week July 11-18 and Aug. 22-29 in 2011. Deetz is also the first player in the Midwest League to win consecutive awards since 2010, when Tom Wilhelmsen of Clinton won Pitcher of the Week Aug. 2-9 and Aug. 10-16.

Per-game average sets 56-year franchise record; season attendance is best since full-stadium renovation

DAVENPORT, Iowa (September 4, 2015) - An average of 3,906 fans per game attended Quad Cities River Bandits home games at Modern Woodmen Park this season, setting a new record for the highest per-game average for a season in the 56-year history of the Quad Cities Midwest League franchise. A total of 250,004 attended River Bandits regular season games this year, setting the single-season attendance record since the full-stadium renovation following the 2003 season.

The 2015 season also saw five of the largest single-game home crowds - all 7,106 or larger - for the Quad Cities franchise since the start of the 2002 season. On July 31, a crowd of 8,207 at Modern Woodmen Park was the ballpark's largest single-game attendance since the full-stadium renovation. The attendance records were achieved despite weather postponing six River Bandits home games - the most of any Midwest League team this season.

"The quarter-million fans who came to the ballpark this season showed again why the Quad Cities is the No. 1 minor league sports market,"  said River Bandits owner Dave Heller. "We are tremendously grateful for the dedication and support of the best fans in minor league baseball, who make Modern Woodmen Park the No. 1 minor league ballpark in America!"

Quad Cities' total home attendance of 250,004 this season was the fourth-most since the franchise joined the Midwest League in 1960 and the highest since 1995. For each of the eight seasons under Main Street Baseball, more than 200,000 fans have attended Quad Cities River Bandits games at Modern Woodmen Park - a streak unprecedented in Quad Cities sports history.

"With their record-setting support, our fans have put their outstanding mark on a memorable season of River Bandits baseball," said General Manager Andrew Chesser. "We look forward to celebrating this achievement and another playoff run on the field with our fans beginning Thursday, Sept. 10, at Modern Woodmen Park."

The Quad Cities franchise record for single-season attendance is 260,471 - a mark set in 1994 as the Quad City River Bandits, an affiliate of the Houston Astros. That season's per-game average of 3,755 was the highest for the franchise until 2014, when the River Bandits had a then-franchise-record 3,885 fans per game.

UP NEXT: Tickets are on sale at riverbandits.com and the Modern Woodmen Park box office for the River Bandits' first home playoff game Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. For all 2015 playoff home games, box seat tickets will be $9 each, while all bleacher and general admission tickets will be $5 each. Current ticket plan holders (12 games or more) receive free playoff tickets by making a $100-per-seat renewal deposit toward a 2016 ticket package. Group area picnic pricing for 2015 playoff games is the same as regular season pricing, with full details at riverbandits.com/groups. Suite rentals, including 16 tickets per suite, are $350 per game. Only tickets for the Sept. 10 game are available before the playoffs. Tickets for other possible playoff home games will be made available once the game becomes necessary. BANDITS POUND SEASON-HIGH 19 HITS IN WIN AT BELOIT

Nick Tanielu, Ramon Laureano and Luis Reynoso each homer in 14-2 road victory

BELOIT, Wis. (September 6, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits center fielder Bobby Boyd, first baseman Bryan Muñiz and catcher Garrett Stubbs each had three hits, and all 10 Quad Cities River Bandits batters had at least one of the team's 19 hits - its most since 2012 - to become the first team in baseball to win 88 games, with a 14-2 victory over the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field Sunday afternoon.

River Bandits All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu opened the scoring with a two-out, first-inning solo home run, and designated hitter Ramon Laureano and second baseman Luis Reynoso added sixth-inning home runs to carry Quad Cities (43-26 second half, 88-49 overall) to a 10-0 lead in support of right-hander Elieser Hernandez (3-3), who struck out six batters in 5 2/3 innings for his first win since Aug. 7.

Snappers right-hander Brett Graves (12-8) retired the game's first two batters before Tanielu swatted his sixth home run - and first since Aug. 8 - over the left-field wall for a 1-0 Quad Cities lead. In the third inning, Reynoso hit a leadoff single to center field, and Tanielu grounded a two-out RBI double down the third-base line. After Muñiz walked, right fielder Drew Ferguson lifted a fly-ball RBI double down the right-field line, and Laureano hit a fly-ball, two-run single into right field to make it 5-0. The first five runs came with two outs.

Hernandez kept Beloit without a hit until the fourth inning, when shortstop Mikey White hit a leadoff single down the third-base line. After walking left fielder Max Kuhn, Hernandez struck out the next three batters to strike out the side for the second straight inning.

Graves kept his team's deficit at 5-0 until the sixth inning, when Laureano led off with a home run to left-center field - his fourth of the season and first since July 4. Stubbs then singled to right field, and shortstop Kristian Trompiz reached on an infield single, before Graves was removed with no outs. On right-hander Rob Huber's first pitch, Reynoso launched a three-run home run over the left-field wall for his first home run since July 26, 2014, with rookie-level Greeneville. Graves was charged with the first eight earned runs on 11 hits and two walks with three strikeouts in five-plus innings. Two batters after Reynoso, Boyd lifted a one-out fly ball toward Kuhn, who missed the catch in left field, allowing Boyd to reach second base. Muñiz brought in Boyd with single to center field to make it 10-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Hernandez walked center fielder Justin Higley, and White hit a double to left field. Hernandez allowed Kuhn's RBI groundout and third baseman Jose Brizuela's RBI double to left-center field before getting the second out, and left-hander Zach Davis got the final out of the inning to keep a 10-2 lead. Hernandez was charged with two earned runs on three hits and two walks.

Quad Cities added a pair of runs off Huber in the seventh inning, when Stubbs hit a one-out single to left-center field, Reynoso drew a two-out walk, left fielder Jason Martin hit an RBI single to center field, and Boyd grounded an RBI single down the third-base line off left-hander Mike Fagan to make it 12-2. In a two-run ninth inning against right-hander Koby Gauna, Martin drew a one-out walk, Boyd singled to center field, third baseman Wander Franco grounded an RBI double down the first-base line, and Muñiz's RBI groundout made it 14-2.

After Davis went 2 1/3 scoreless innings, right-hander Eric Peterson worked around two singles in a scoreless ninth inning to end the game.

BELOIT'S 2-RUN 8TH ROBS BANDITS OF FINALE WIN

Quad Cities finishes with best winning percentage in full-season MiLB, sets franchise ERA mark

BELOIT, Wis. (September 7, 2015) - The Beloit Snappers scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead and eventual regular season finale victory at Pohlman Field Monday afternoon over the Quad Cities River Bandits, who finished with the best winning percentage in full-season Minor League Baseball for the first time in franchise history.

In addition to their .638 winning percentage, the River Bandits (43-27 second half, 88-50 overall) had their second-best regular season record in franchise history, trailing only the 91-46 mark of the 1992 Quad City River Bandits. At the end of the Minor League Baseball regular season Monday, only the River Bandits, the Houston Astros Class-A affiliate, and the Houston Astros Double-A affiliate Corpus Christi (89-51 in the Texas League) led professional baseball with records 38 games above .500.

After posting a season-high 19 hits Sunday, the River Bandits stole a season-high six bases Monday. Center fielder Bobby Boyd had three stolen bases to match his season high and finish the season with 40 stolen bases - the highest total by an Astros minor leaguer, the third-most in the Midwest League, and the most by a Quad Cities player in 10 years. Boyd also began the scoring Monday. In a scoreless game in the fourth inning, Boyd drew a one-out walk and stole second base with All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu batting. With first baseman Bryan Muñiz batting, Boyd stole third base - the fourth time he had stolen two bases in the same inning this season - and scored on Muñiz's line-drive RBI single - the River Bandits' first hit - to right-center field for a 1-0 Quad Cities lead.

The Snappers (29-40, 55-84) answered in the bottom of the inning against right-hander Rogelio Armenteros. Shortstop Mikey White drew a leadoff walk, and third baseman Jose Brizuela hit a one-out, two-run home run to right field for a 2-1 Beloit lead. After the home run, Armenteros only allowed two baserunners on a single and a walk, with neither advancing to scoring position. Armenteros finished a career-high seven innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Quad Cities tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. River Bandits right fielder Ramon Laureano doubled to left field and went to third base on a flyout by shortstop Kristian Trompiz. After second baseman Jose Fernandez walked, a double steal scored Laureano. In the sixth inning, Boyd hit a leadoff double down the left-field line, stole third base and scored when catcher Argenis Raga overthrew third base.

Right-hander Lachlan Madden (0-2) started the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead by walking center fielder Justin Higley. On first baseman Gabriel Santana's sacrifice, Madden overthrew first base, allowing Higley to score and Santana to reach third base. Designated hitter Joe Bennie hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly to right field. Right-hander Ryan Gorton (1-0) earned the win with perfect eighth and ninth innings.

The River Bandits finished the season setting 56-year Quad Cities Midwest League franchise records for players (61), pitchers (37), and starting pitchers (20), which all led the Houston Astros minor league system. Quad Cities' Midwest League-leading and franchise-record 2.65 team ERA this season was the lowest by a Houston Astros-affiliated domestic team - major or minor league - since 1970, when the Columbus (Ga.) Astros held a 2.57 ERA in the Double-A Southern League.

The River Bandits open a best-of-three Western Division Semifinal at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. In Game 1, River Bandits right-hander Joshua James (7-4), whose 2.63 ERA led Astros minor leaguers and was fifth in the Midwest League, is scheduled to face Kernels right-hander Felix Jorge (6-7), whose 2.79 ERA ranked seventh in the league.

UP NEXT: Tickets are on sale at riverbandits.com and the Modern Woodmen Park box office for the River Bandits' first home playoff game Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Current ticket plan holders (12 games or more) receive free playoff tickets by making a $100-per-seat renewal deposit toward a 2016 ticket package. Quad Cities rides two-out, seven-run rally in the fifth inning to 11-5 win over Kane County
DAVENPORT, Iowa (September 4, 2015) - With seven two-out runs in the fifth inning, the Quad Cities River Bandits broke a 2-2 tie in an eventual 11-5 victory over the Kane County Cougars, and all nine River Bandits batters had a hit to help the team clinch the best overall regular season record in the Midwest League for the first time in 23 years in front of 3,649 at Modern Woodmen Park Thursday night.
Four River Bandits had two hits to help Quad Cities (41-25 second half, 86-48 overall) clinch the league's best record for the first time since a franchise-best 91-46 regular season mark in 1992. The River Bandits also had seven extra-base hits among 13 total to bounce back from consecutive losses for the first time since a season-long six-game losing streak Aug. 9-15. After allowing two runs in the first three innings, River Bandits right-hander Joshua James (7-4) recovered to scatter eight hits, two walks and a hit batter with five strikeouts in six innings, lowering his ERA to 2.63 - the best among Houston Astros minor leaguers.
In the first inning, both of the River Bandits' hits were for extra bases, as center fielder Bobby Boyd tripled down the first-base line with one out and scored on a two-out RBI double to right field by right fielder Ramon Laureano against Cougars starter Ethan Elias (11-6). James allowed Kane County (45-21, 81-53) to tie the game in the second inning. Second baseman Henry Castillo and designated hitter Dawel Lugo each singled, while a throwing error by second baseman Jose Fernandez put both runners in scoring position with nobody out. Catcher Michael Perez struck out and third baseman Joe Munoz grounded to shortstop Kristian Trompiz, who threw to catcher Marlon Avea at home plate to retire Castillo. Cougars right fielder Victor Reyes then singled to center to score Lugo from second for a 1-1 tie.
In the top of the third, the Cougars took their only lead, as center fielder Colin Bray and first baseman Marty Herum each singled to start the inning. Left fielder Cody Regis flied out to right for the first out, and although neither runner made a full attempt to advance, Laureano's throw bounced into the River Bandits dugout on the third-base side to score Bray and send Herum to third base with nobody out. James then slammed the door on the rally, striking out Castillo and Lugo swinging, keeping the score at a 2-1 deficit.
Quad Cities tied in the fourth inning, as designated hitter Drew Ferguson doubled to left-center field, went to third base on a groundout and scored on a two-out throwing error by Munoz. With a 2-2 game in the bottom of the fifth inning, left fielder Jason Martin walked and was retired at second base on Boyd's bunt. Boyd then stole second base and went to third base on first baseman Bryan Muñiz's fly ball to right field. With two outs, Laureano tripled to left-center field to score Boyd for a 3-2 lead. Ferguson and Fernandez both drew walks against Elias, who exited with the bases loaded. Jose Martinez, the first man in from the pen for Kane County, walked Trompiz to score Laureano and increase the Quad Cities lead to 4-2. Third baseman Wander Franco drove in a pair with a single to right field, and catcher Marlon Avea followed that with a two-run double on a line drive down the left-field line to make it 8-2. Martin, batting for the second time in the inning, singled to right-center field to score Avea and cap the inning that closed with a 9-2 Quad Cities lead.
Muñiz scored the River Bandits' final two runs. After a leadoff infield single in the sixth inning, two wils pitches put him at third base before Fernandez hit an RBI single to center field. In the bottom of the eighth, Muñiz hit a booming solo home run - his third in eight days and fourth in the Midwest League - over the Modern Woodmen Berm in left field to give Quad Cities an 11-2 edge. Kane County rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth against Angel Heredia on Reyes' first career home run - and the first allowed by Heredia in more than a year - that tallied three runs to make it 11-5, but Heredia got the next three batters to ground out to Trompiz to end the game.
The River Bandits conclude their season series with playoff-bound Kane County with their regular season home finale at 7 p.m. Friday. Right-hander Brock Dykxhoorn (8-4, 3.72) will start for Quad Cities, while left-hander Josh Taylor (3-3, 3.54) starts for the Cougars.
UP NEXT: The River Bandits will have fireworks following the game Friday, when the team will be celebrating  Fan Appreciation Night, presented by Bierstube, with Friday Fireworks presented by Smart Toyota of Quad Cities, WLLR and WQAD. Individual tickets are on sale at the River Bandits box office and online at riverbandits.com. Ticket plans of 12 to 70 games - which include free parking, reserved seats, merchandise discounts, and guaranteed giveaways - are available by calling 563-324-3000.

After trailing by two through four innings, Kane County recovers to take opener from Quad Cities

DAVENPORT, Iowa (September 2, 2015) - Kane County left fielder Victor Reyes was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth inning, and center fielder Colin Bray scored four runs, as the Cougars came from behind to beat the Quad Cities River Bandits, 8-6, in front of 1,620 at Modern Woodmen Park Wednesday night.

The Cougars (45-20 second half, 81-52 overall) overcame a 4-2 deficit in the fourth inning with a single run in both the fifth and seventh innings before rallying for four runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead. Kane County and the River Bandits (40-25, 85-48) each scored single runs in the first two innings against starters Rogelio Armenteros and Jared Miller, respectively.

In a 2-2 game in the bottom of the fourth inning, River Bandits second baseman Jose Fernandez drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, and went to third base on a throwing error by catcher Stryker Trahan with nobody out for first baseman Ryan Bottger, who singled through the left side to give the River Bandits their first lead at 3-2. Catcher Garrett Stubbs laid down his sacrifice bunt of the game to advance Bottger to second, and a wild pitch moved Bottger to third with third baseman Luis Reynoso at the plate. Reynoso grounded a ball to shortstop Ildemaro Vargas, and Bottger tried to score, but Bottger was retired in a rundown that ended Reynoso at second base. Left fielder Jason Martin drove in Reynoso with a ground-ball double off the first-base bag to increase the Quad Cities lead to 4-2. All four earned runs were charged to Miller, who lasted six innings, allowing seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Kane County answered with a run in the fifth inning without a hit, as Bray walked, went to second on a fly ball to right, advanced to third on a ground ball to third, and then scored on a balk by Armenteros to get the Cougars within 4-3. The visitors produced the tying run in the seventh on a double to right-center field by first baseman Cody Regis to score Bray, who led off the inning with a walk. Armenteros finished the fifth inning, allowing three earned runs on four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.

With the score still knotted at four, Cougars second baseman Dawel Lugo led off the eighth with a single against Lachlan Madden (0-1), who tossed scoreless sixth and seventh innings following his call up Wednesday from rookie-level Greeneville. Trahan doubled to right-center field to advance Lugo to third with nobody out. Madden got pinch hitter Marty Herum to fly out to center field for the first out of the inning, before left-hander Zach Davis entered to face Reyes, who hit a high chopper over Reynoso to score both Lugo and Trahan for a 6-4 lead, with Reyes advancing to second base on the throw home by left fielder Drew Ferguson, whose error sent Reyes to third base. Vargas flied out to center to score Reyes and give Kane County a 7-4 lead. Bray then drew the last of his three walks, advanced to second on the Regis' walk, and scored on an infield hit by Henry Castillo when Fernandez made a throwing error, giving the Cougars an 8-4 lead.

The River Bandits tried to rally back, scoring a two-out run in the eighth inning against right-hander Scott Schultz (1-0) on an RBI double by Stubbs to make it a three-run game. Quad Cities had the first two batters reach base against Luis Ramirez in the ninth inning, as Martin walked and Ferguson doubled to left field, putting runners on second and third bases with nobody out. Shortstop Kristian Trompiz drove in one run with a sacrifice fly to center field, narrowing the gap to 8-6, but designated hitter Bryan Muñiz grounded out, and right fielder Ramon Laureano struck out to end the game, as Ramirez earned his 10th save.

Right-hander gives Quad Cities three weekly pitching award winners for the first time since 2007

DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 31, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Dean Deetz has been named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for his performance during the week of Aug. 24-30, the Midwest League announced on Monday.

Deetz, 21, is the third River Bandit to win Midwest League Pitcher of the Week honors this season, following right-handers Angel Heredia and David Paulino, who won the award back-to-back for June 29-July 5 and July 6-12, respectively. Quad Cities last had at least three Pitcher of the Week winners in 2007 when Elvis Hernandez (April 5-12), P.J. Walters (May 7-14), Tyler Herron (June 5-July 2), and Michael Schellinger (July 16-23) took home the award.

Following infielder Mott Hyde, who was the Midwest League Player of the Week for April 27-May 3, Heredia, Paulino and Deetz give the River Bandits four Midwest League weekly award winners this season. Quad Cities last won four weekly awards in 2011, when Oscar Tavares won Player of the Week July 11-18 and Aug. 22-29, and pitchers Anthony Ferrara (April 25-May 2) and Trevor Rosenthal (July 18-25) won Pitcher of the Week.

Deetz won the award for his start Aug. 24, when he pitched seven no-hit innings against Clinton, striking out a career-high nine batters and walking two. In the 18-0 win over Clinton, Quad Cities came within two outs of pitching its first no-hitter since 2009. The shutout was one of Quad Cities' 16 this season - the club's most since pitching 17 in 1980. The River Bandits' 2.61 team ERA leads all of full-season baseball and is on pace to be the lowest in the 56-year franchise history for Quad Cities in the Midwest League.

In five games since joining the River Bandits from Short Season Class-A Tri-City July 29, Deetz has started four games and is 3-1 with a 1.11 ERA, 26 strikeouts, and 11 walks while allowing 13 hits in 24 1/3 innings. In his second season pitching in the Houston Astros organization, Deetz is 7-3 with a 2.05 ERA in 52 2/3 innings with 47 strikeouts and 21 walks, a .180 opponents' average and 1.06 WHIP.

BANDITS CAN'T ERASE EARLY DEFICIT, FALL TO BEES

Five runs in the first two innings were enough for Burlington to take season series finale
BURLINGTON, Iowa (September 1, 2015) - The Burlington Bees offense racked up five runs on five hits in the first two innings, and the Bees bullpen withstood late scoring threats, as the Bees beat the Quad Cities River Bandits, 7-4, Tuesday night at Community Field.
The Bees (23-41 second half, 58-75 overall) pounced on River Bandits starter Elieser Hernandez (2-3) in the very early going, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning. Center fielder Ayendy Perez and second baseman Tim Arakawa each reached on base hits to start the frame. Catcher Taylor Ward reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Perez to third, with Arakawa forced out at second base for the first out of the inning. Shortstop Zach Houchins singled to left field to drive in Perez and give Burlington a 1-0 lead. With two out, runners on second and third bases and designated hitter Natanael Delgado at the plate, a passed ball by catcher Marlon Avea and a balk by Hernandez each plated a run, giving the Bees a 3-0 lead.
Burlington added to its lead in the second inning, as the first three batters reached base, beginning with a one-out throwing error by shortstop Kristian Trompiz, allowing right fielder Mitchell Esser to reach, and a walk to third baseman Nick Flair. Perez doubled home Esser for the fourth Bees run, advancing Flair to third base. With Arakawa batting, Hernandez threw a wild pitch that plated Flair and made it a 5-0 Burlington lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Esser led off the inning with an infield single to first baseman Wander Franco, advanced to second on a ground out, and made it to third on a wild pickoff attempt by Hernandez. Perez then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Esser and making it 6-0.
Forced to play catch-up against Justin Anderson (9-9), the River Bandits (40-24, 85-47) finally chipped into the lead in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Trompiz tripled to left-center field, and third baseman Luis Reynoso brought him home with a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Trompiz for Quad Cities' first run.
After Delgado's fifth-inning solo homer made it a 7-1 game, the River Bandits rallied again in the sixth inning. They loaded the bases with Avea's infield popup-turned-infield-single, a one-out double by left fielder Jason Martin, and a pitch that hit designated hitter Bryan Muñiz. Right fielder Drew Ferguson took a 2-1 Anderson offering and found the gap in right-center field, clearing the bases and cutting the lead in half. However, the rally ended as second baseman Jose Fernandez struck out and Ferguson was thrown out trying to steal third base on the same play, keeping Burlington ahead, 7-4.
Three runs was the closest Quad Cities came against the Bees bullpen. Right-handers Gaither Bumgardner and Jordan Piche escaped jams with the tying run at the plate in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively. Piche got the last four outs for his eighth save.
The River Bandits return to Modern Woodmen Park Wednesday night for the start of their final regular season home series, a three-game set with the playoff-bound Kane County Cougars. For the opener, the River Bandits will send right-hander Rogelio Armenteros (1-0, 0.00) to the mound, while the Cougars will counter with left-hander Jared Miller (4-4, 5.92).

LONG BALL POWERS BANDITS TO 5-2 WIN OVER BURLINGTON

Trompiz and Muñiz hit fourth-inning home runs for Quad Cities, as Deetz extends scoreless streak

BURLINGTON, Iowa (August 31, 2015) - Shortstop Kristian Trompiz and first baseman Bryan Muñiz each homered, and starter Dean Deetz pitched five scoreless innings to extend his streak to 16 1/3 consecutive innings without allowing a run, as the Quad Cities River Bandits bested the Burlington Bees, 5-2, at Community Field Monday night.

Pitching for the first time since throwing seven no-hit innings Aug. 24 at home against Clinton, Deetz (4-1) retired the first seven Bees in order before a one-out double by right fielder Trever Allen in the third inning. Deetz only allowed one other hit on a night where every batter put a ball into play. Burlington (22-41 second half, 57-75 overall) put two runners on base in the fourth inning, as shortstop Zach Houchins reached on a one-out error by Luis Reynoso at second base, and catcher Taylor Ward singled to put runners at first and second bases. But Deetz got left fielder Trevor Gretzky to fly out to left, and first baseman Steven Mateo ended the inning on a ground ball to Wander Franco at third, who forced out Ward with a throw to Reynoso at second to end the inning.

The River Bandits (40-23, 85-46) took advantage of control issues by Burlington starter Keynan Middleton (5-11) in the early going, with both catcher Garrett Stubbs and Trompiz walking to start the second inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Reynoso moved both runners into scoring position, Franco's ground ball to Houchins at shortstop scored Stubbs and put Quad Cities ahead, 1-0. Franco has collected his first two Midwest League RBIs in the first two games of the series.

The lead widened in the fourth, as Trompiz began the inning with his sixth home run of the year - a drive to straight-away left field. Reynoso followed with a walk and advanced to second on a one-out base hit to right fieldby center fielder Bobby Boyd. Left fielder Jason Martin did not advance the runners, as he flied out to center, but Muñiz brought home both runners on his third home run as a River Bandit this season on a booming shot to left to open up a 5-0 Quad Cities lead.

Following Deetz to start the sixth inning, reliever Juan Robles made his Midwest League debut and became the 59th different River Bandit (tying a franchise record) to play in a game this season, Burlington rallied for a pair of runs in the seventh. After walking a pair in the sixth and recording his first Midwest League strikeout, Robles retired the first batter of the seventh inning before walking the bases loaded with one out. Jacob Dorris took over to face center fielder Ayendy Perez and promptly threw a wild pitch, allowing the Bees to score their first run and move the other two runners into scoring position. Burlington scored again when Perez grounded a ball to the right side, scoring the runner from third base and making it a 5-2 game. Dorris got out of the inning by getting second baseman Tim Arakawa to ground out to Muñiz, who fed the ball to Dorris covering the base to end the threat for the Bees.

Dorris allowed one runner in the last two innings of work and struck out three batters to earn his first save with the River Bandits.

OPPORTUNISTIC BANDITS EDGE OUT BURLINGTON

Quad Cities scores runs on a sacrifice fly and wild pitch for 84th win - second-most in franchise history

BURLINGTON, Iowa (August 30, 2015) - Brock Dykxhoorn allowed one run on six hits and struck out three batters in seven innings, and the Quad Cities River Bandits capitalized on their chances offensively, scratching two runs across on four hits to beat the Burlington Bees, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Community Field.

Dykxhoorn (8-4) tied a career high with seven innings pitched, reaching that mark for the third time this season after accomplishing the feat on July 2 against Peoria and Aug. 9 against Dayton. Dykxhoorn became Quad Cities' first eight-game winner this season.

The scoring began in the second inning against Burlington starter Michael Bolaski (9-11) on a rally that began with River Bandits second baseman Jose Fernandez reaching on an error by Bees third baseman Nick Flair. With first baseman Ryan Bottger batting, Fernandez stole second base and advanced to third on Bottger's infield hit to Flair. Shortstop Luis Reynoso walked to load the bases for third baseman Wander Franco, who flied out to left, deep enough to score Fernandez and give Quad Cities (39-23 second half, 84-46 overall) the 1-0 lead.

The Bees (22-41, 57-75) looked ready to pull even in their half of the second with runners on first and second bases and one out, but Dykxhoorn recovered well, getting right fielder Natanael Delgado to fly out to center field and designated hitter Trever Allen to ground out to third base to end the threat.

Burlington tied the game in the fourth inning on a leadoff single by second baseman Tim Arakawa and RBI double by shortstop Zach Houchins. With the Bees primed take the lead, Dykxhoorn buckled down again, retiring left fielder Trevor Gretzky on a fly ball to right field, striking out first baseman Steven Mateo, and getting Delgado to fly out to center field with the go-ahead run on third base.

After Gretzky's seventh-inning leadoff single and stolen base of second with nobody out, Dykxhoorn finished the inning and the outing strong, striking out Mateo and Delgado, and coaxing a ground ball back to himself on the mound off the bat of Allen.

With Dykxhoorn still the pitcher of record in the top of the eighth inning and Bolaski still in the game, the River Bandits began a two-out rally with the bases empty, as center fielder Bobby Boyd tripled to left-center field. Left fielder Jason Martin and designated hitter Drew Ferguson each walked, knocking Bolaski out of the game in favor of right-handed reliever Jason Hoppe. With right fielder Ramon Laureano at the plate, Hoppe's wild pitch scooted far enough from catcher Taylor Ward to score Boyd and put Quad Cities ahead, 2-1.

The Bees had one last rally in the tank against Quad Cities reliever Zach Davis in the eighth inning. Center fielder Ayendy Perez hit a one-out single, and Arakawa reached on a two-out fielding error by Fernandez. Angel Heredia came in from the bullpen to get out of the jam, and in an eight-pitch at-bat, he got Houchins to ground out to Fernandez to end the inning. Heredia worked a perfect ninth, ending the game by catching Delgado looking for a strikeout to seal the victory, earning his sixth save in 15 days and team-high 12th overall this season.

With the 2-1 win, the River Bandits won their 84th game - the second-most in Quad Cities franchise history behind the 1992 Quad City River Bandits, who won 91 games. Sunday's contest was the ninth one-run game between Quad Cities and Burlington this season, and the sixth straight game decided by the minimum.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 29, 2015) - Peoria's Midwest League All-Star left-hander Austin Gomber pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits, and the No. 5 through No. 9 hitters in the Chiefs lineup collected eight of the team's nine hits in a 4-2 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits in front of 5,948 at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday night.
Gomber (15-3) won his seventh consecutive start and beat the River Bandits (38-23 second half, 83-46 overall) for the second time in four starts after losing his first two decisions to Quad Cities (38-23 second half, 83-46 overall) in April.

On the pitch when Bottger struck out, Fernandez stole third base and advanced home on O'Keefe's wild throw that went flying pver third baseman Paul DeJong into left field, making it a 2-1 game.
After the second inning, Quad Cities starter Joshua James (6-4) kept the Chiefs off the scoreboard until the eighth inning, when Derek Gibson had a leadoff bunt single and went to second base on James' errant throw to first base. After James' wild pitch sent Gibson to third base, DeJong's sacrifice fly gave Peoria a 3-1 lead. James pitched a career-high eight innings and tied his career high of seven strikeouts. James became the first River Bandit to go eight full innings in a start since Michael Feliz did so against Burlington Aug. 5, 2014.
Peoria increased its lead in the ninth on a solo home run by Bader off reliever Steve Naemark. The River Bandits were held to just three base runners in the fifth through eighth innings by Gomber and relievers Nick Lomascolo and Nick Frey.
In the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead, Chiefs right-hander Jery Then started by walking Fernandez and Bottger, bringing the tying run to the plate with nobody out. Trompiz reached on a fielder's choice fielded by shortstop Oscar Mercado, who cut down the lead runner Fernandez at third for the first out, and Then struck out Reynoso looking for the second out. Franco, called up Friday from the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Astros, hit a ball up the middle that was knocked down by Then and overthrown by the pitcher to first base, allowing Bottger to score, while sending Trompiz to third and Franco to second. With the tying runs in scoring position, catcher Marlon Avea, who joined the River Bandits Saturday from Short-Season Tri-City and earlier singled in his first Midwest League at-bat,  struck out swinging on three pitches to end the game, earning Then his second save of the year.
ARMENTEROS LEADS BANDITS' LEAGUE-BEST 16TH SHUTOUT

Quad Cities' 83rd win ties 2010 team for second-most in franchise history
DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 28, 2015) - Just called up from Short Season Tri-City on Tuesday, Rogelio Armenteros fit in with his new team in his Midwest League debut, throwing five innings of one-hit shutout baseball, striking out a career-high nine batters and walking one as the Quad Cities River Bandits blanked the Peoria Chiefs, 3-0, in front of 6,696 at Modern Woodmen Park Friday night.
Armenteros (1-0) was the 34th pitcher used by the River Bandits (38-22 second half, 83-45 overall) this year, and he became the 20th different starting pitcher this season, both Quad Cities franchise records. In his five innings of work, Armenteros collected at least one strikeout each inning and only allowed baserunners on a single, walk, error, and third-strike wild pitch.
The River Bandits were able to rally against Peoria right-hander Jack Flaherty (8-3) for a run in the second inning. Designated hitter Drew Ferguson led off the inning with a base hit and stole second base with right fielder Ramon Laureano batting. Laureano singled to right, moving Ferguson to third, and stole second base with second baseman Jose Fernandez at bat. Fernandez hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Ferguson and give Quad Cities a 1-0 lead.
Peoria (37-23, 70-58) had its best opportunity of the night in the third inning after a leadoff single by catcher Steve Bean. With one out and Bean on first base, second baseman Darren Seferina walked, before shortstop Oscar Mercado flied out to center field. Third baseman Paul DeJong reached on an error by third baseman Luis Reynoso to load the bases for first baseman Alex De Leon, but Armenteros struck out the Chiefs' RBI leader to end the inning and leave the bases full.
In the fourth inning, the River Bandits capitalized on two Peoria errors to add to their lead. With the bases empty and two outs, Fernandez singled, and catcher Trent Woodward reached on catcher interference by Bean - the inning's first error - to put runners on first and second bases with two outs. Shortstop Kristian Trompiz grounded a ball to Mercado, who dropped it, loading the bases. Reynoso cashed in on the pair of errors by depositing the first pitch he saw from Flaherty into right-center field to score Fernandez and Woodward, giving Quad Cities a 3-0 lead. Flaherty went a career-high seven innings, allowing three runs - one earned - on five hits and one walk and six strikeouts.
For the River Bandits, Eric Peterson pitched three shutout innings in relief, allowing two hits in the sixth and one in the eighth, but also striking out a pair of batters. Angel Heredia struck out one batter and allowed a runner on Fernandez's error in the ninth inning before recording his 11th save of the season to preserve the win.
The Midwest League-leading 16th shutout by Quad Cities is the most for the franchise since pitching 17 in 1980.

BANDITS SURGE EARLY, HANG ON TO BEAT PEORIA, 8-6

Quad Cities jumps to 8-1 lead and withstands furious late rally for MiLB-best 82nd win

DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 27, 2015) - First baseman Bryan Muñiz was 2-for-4 with two runs and a two-run home run in his first professional game as a leadoff hitter, and left-hander Zach Davis halted a five-run rally to preserve the lead in the Quad Cities River Bandits' 8-6 win over the Peoria Chiefs, who clinched a playoff spot earlier Thursday night, in front of 4,671 at Modern Woodmen Park.

Davis entered in the eighth inning after Peoria (37-22 second half, 70-57 overall) rallied to close an 8-1 gap to an 8-5 deficit. With two runners on base, Davis allowed one more run to score before getting a ground ball to end the inning and keep the River Bandits (37-22, 82-45) ahead, 8-6. In the ninth inning, the left-handed reliever allowed a one-out single and a two-out walk to put the tying run at first base before a game-ending popout earned Davis his first save since Aug. 15, 2014, with the rookie-level Greeneville Astros.

The River Bandits trailed in the first inning, after a two-out double by third baseman Paul DeJong and RBI single by first baseman Alex De Leon. With a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, Chiefs left-hander Dewin Perez (2-6) allowed consecutive one-out singles to third baseman Luis Reynoso and Muñiz, who both advanced on a passed ball by catcher Luis Cruz. Center fielder Jason Martin grounded out to first, scoring Reynoso and tying the game, 1-1. Designated hitter Ramon Laureano followed with a double to right-center field that one-hopped over the fence, bringing Muñiz across home plate and giving Quad Cities a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, the River Bandits took advantage of three Chiefs errors, starting with shortstop Oscar Mercado's fielding error on a leadoff ground ball by catcher Trent Woodward. Second baseman Jose Fernandez bunted, and Cruz threw it past Mercado at second base into center field. As Woodward advanced to third base, center fielder Harrison Bader fired a throw toward third base that skipped past DeJong, allowing Fernandez to advance to second base. Quad Cities capitalized with an RBI single by shortstop Kristian Trompiz, plating Woodward, before right fielder Ryan Bottger's sacrifice fly to right field, driving in Fernandez and making it 4-1. Reynoso popped out before Muñiz capped the rally with a two-out, two-run homer to left-center field - his second as a River Bandit and fourth of the season.

The largest lead came with two more runs in the sixth inning. Bottger and Reynoso drew consecutive walks from reliever Steve Sabatino. Muñiz flied out, and Martin struck out, before Laureano drew a walk to load the bases. Sabatino was lifted for left-hander Sasha Kuebel, and left fielder Drew Ferguson bounced a ball over the mound and into center field for two-run single and 8-1 Quad Cities lead.

After the first-inning Chiefs run, River Bandits pitchers kept Peoria off the board for six straight innings, including two scoreless innings by starter Thomas Eshelman, right-hander Jacob Dorris (1-0) in his Midwest League debut, and Elieser Hernandez, who began the sixth inning, and pitched a pair of scoreless innings himself, before getting into trouble in the eighth. With two runners on base and two outs, back-to-back singles by designated hitter Brian O'Keefe and Cruz made it 8-3. Two batters later, second baseman Darren Seferina doubled to right field to score two more runs, forcing Hernandez out after 2 2/3 innings and bringing Davis into the game.

The 82nd win for the River Bandits gives them the third-highest win total in Quad Cities franchise history, trailing only the 1992 Quad City River Bandits, who won 91 games, and the 2010 Quad Cities River Bandits, who won 83. Despite the loss, Peoria clinched a playoff spot by virtue of Beloit's loss to Wisconsin, sending the Chiefs to the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 27, 2015) - The Quad Cities River Bandits were one of only two teams across Minor League Baseball to have two specialty jerseys voted among the top 13 among 124 specialty jerseys in MiLB.com's Jersey Joust, whose results were announced on Wednesday. The River Bandits' 2014 Autism Awareness jersey received the third-most votes overall and was the top-voted jersey from any of the 30 Class-A clubs, while the River Bandits' 2015 Boy Scouts Jersey finished 13th in the voting.
On each night the River Bandits wore the specialty jerseys, proceeds from an auction at Modern Woodmen Park went to benefit Quad Cities-area charities. "The Autism Awareness Jersey and Boy Scouts Jersey have already made a difference to people in the Quad Cities, thanks to our partnerships with the Quad Cities Autism Center and the Boy Scouts of America," said River Bandits owner Dave Heller. "We are grateful to our fans who have made our charitable jersey auctions such a huge success, and to the fans across the country who have recognized their value both as unique entertainment and a great way to help people here in the Quad Cities."
