DES MOINES, IOWA (April 9, 2025) — As part of a massive multi-state relief effort, the American Red Cross is rushing critical emergency support to thousands of families pummeled by relentless floods and tornadoes across the South and Midwest. This support includes eighteen Iowans who have deployed or soon will deploy. Severe storms, strong winds, tornadoes, and heavy rains have inundated communities leaving a trail of heartbreak with damaged homes, roadways, and critical infrastructure.

Des Moines – In response to the concerns of the Iowa Environmental Council, other environmental groups and over 700 Iowans, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has announced its plans to terminate a proposed rule change that would significantly weaken Iowa’s water quality standards for recreational lakes, rivers and streams. As a result, the Single Sample Maximum E. coli bacteria standard will remain part of Iowa’s water quality standards.

The Alzheimer's Association will be having a special event on Thursday, September 3 at 12:00 P.M. at The Vine Coffeehouse (1207 N. Jefferson St. in Ottumwa) to kickoff our special Iowa Caucus Project in the Ottumwa area!

For the past few months, Alzheimer's advocates have been growing a movement in Iowa and New Hampshire that is raising awareness and persuading presidential candidates to discuss their plans for addressing Alzheimer's disease.  We want to bring this movement to Ottumwa!

We will be talking about ways we can advocate for those with Alzheimer's and their loved ones, ensuring this disease becomes a national priority.  We will discuss how to talk to a candidate, the media, and other ways to grow an Alzheimer's Awareness Movement across Iowa.

Come join us for a great discussion on how we can make sure our next President will be dedicated to helping us end Alzheimer's disease!  To register, please go to: act.alz.org/iatrainings.  Please email me at eholley@alz.org if you have any questions.
Looking forward to seeing you there!

I am excited to announce that the Alzheimer's Association will have a booth in the (air-conditioned) Varied Industries Building at this year's Iowa State Fair!  We will be using the booth to spread awareness of Alzheimer's and everything the Alzheimer's Association does throughout our state.  We will also be taking this opportunity to promote our Iowa Caucus Project and circulate our petition asking all presidential candidates to prioritize Alzheimer's in their health care plans.

I invite you all to join us in staffing the booth.  We will have our booth from 9am to 9pm August 13th - August 23rd.  Each volunteer will receive a free ticket to the fair and a free Alzheimer's Association t-shirt.  Volunteer shifts are only four hours, and then you will be free to enjoy the fair.

This is a tremendous opportunity to educate the tens of thousands expected to attend the fair this year on Alzheimer's and what you all are doing to help end Alzheimer's!

To volunteer, please click HERE to select the shift, or shifts you would like.  You can volunteer by yourself or in a group.
Please email me (eholley@alz.org) with any questions.

Hope to see you there!

Emily

P.S.  If you haven't signed our statewide petition to presidential candidates, please do so:  act.alz.org/iapetition.  Our goal is 10,000 signatures by November 7th, at which time we will present the signatures to each presidential candidate.
