Readings Under the Influence will launch the first themed installment of quarterly RUI events, in tandem with the RUIX zine releases, that celebrate live + local art in thename of fun, inspiration, community, and revolution.

Each RUI will feature wordsmith artists who vary contribution (think: poets, playwrights, filmmakers, comedy). The RUI stage is a home for collaborative art that fuses spoken word with multimedia, music, dance, and visual arts ( + healthy irreverence). Each RUI event is also distinctive and dissimilar from the last.

Everyone Is busy during the summer, and the Dubuque Area Arts Collective is not exempt. From our latest gallery exhibit to Instagram photo contests to mural painting to publishing the magazine in your hands, we're busy doing what we love and sharing it with the community.

We kicked off the summer accepting submissions for the eARTh exhibit, which focused on work addressing environmental issues and/or made from recycled materials. We received hundreds of amazing submissions from Galena, IL to NYC to Africa. The final selections contributed to what we've been told was our strongest show yet.

IN THIS GRAIN ISSUE:

We showcase work from the show, including Jave Gakumei Yoshimoto's multi-colored screen prints that won "best of show." In the spirit of the eARTh show, we continue our exploration of the show's themes by taking a closer look at some of the work from eARTh. We also introduce you to new artists like painter Tony Cavallo, who will never be accused of actively trying to reduce his carbon footprint, and yet truly recycles and reuses as a way of life, not as an activist but as part of his monk-like pursuit of perfecting his craft. Also, Dubuque's own Jessica Weis, whose work was featured in the eARTH exhibit, details how to create impressively high quality ink from thing you can find in your backyard.

Last but not least, we choose the 10 winners of our Instagram photo contest: Nature and Architecture in Downtown Dubuque. One might not expect to define a cell phone pic as "moving," but just see for yourself what one Dubuque and an iPhone can do.

Dubuque Area Arts Collective is proud to feature a new group show of students from Dubuque Senior and Hempstead High School.  Artwork displayed will range from 2-Dimensional to 3-Dimensional work.  The exhibit will include drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, ceramics, and sculpture in this dynamic display of talented young artists. Self-Portraits, Mythology, Figurative and Mixed Media sculpture are some of the many themes explored. Artwork displayed has been created by students participating in Basic and Advanced Art Courses offered at each school. Free admission/ accepting donations. LIVE MUSIC BY STUDENTS.  

* Exhibit open until June 14th. Gallery open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 4 PM.

The premise is simple: pick a creative project, do it every day in March, then show your work the following month in a big group art show!


The Dubuque Area Arts Collective invites you to participate in Fun-A-Day Dubuque 2015, an artistic way to fight the winter doldrums. Fun-A-Day Dubuque is open to all ages, and participation is free. All types of creative expression are encouraged, and experience as an artist is not necessary.

Use all, most or some days in March to be creative and have fun! Previous years' efforts have included cartoons, audio recordings, knitting, and photography and visual art projects, all created daily (or mostly daly) throughout the month. 

How to participate? Its simple. Email funadaydubuque@gmail.com and tell us what your project will be. If possible, send us images of works-in-progress, so we can share it though our Facebook page and blog. We will send you instructions on how to show your finished project in the art show.
