Through Saturday, September 28
Voices Studio, 1585 Central Avenue, Dubuque IA
From now through September 28, patrons of Dubuque's Voices Studio can witness a spectacular confluence of talent and vision as renowned artists Leslie Bell and Lee White join forces for an extraordinary exhibition Under the Same Sun, the display showcasing a diverse array of artworks that reflect the profound journeys and creative mastery of both artists.
Raised in Washington D.C., Leslie Bell has a rich history steeped in the cultural and artistic vibrancy of the nation's capital. Born in 1947, Bell's formative years were spent immersed in the galleries and museums of D.C. He honed his artistic skills under the tutelage of Father Edward Catich at Davenport's St. Ambrose University and later at Northern Illinois University, where he studied with Walter Ball and Richard Beard. Bell's work, characterized by its figurative nature and narrative depth, has captivated audiences nationwide. His paintings, described by Jerry Cullum of Art Paper as a "rare combination of vision, skill, and wit," continue to enchant with their brilliantly composed landscapes and stunning light effects.
Lee White, a protégé of Bell, brings a fresh yet deeply evocative perspective to the exhibition. Born in Muscatine and raised in rural Illinois, White's artistic journey led him to study under Bell at St. Ambrose University. He further refined his craft at the University of Iowa, where he earned his Master's in Painting and Drawing. White's work delves into the complexities of repressed memory and nuanced enigma, eliciting powerful, often unspoken responses from viewers. His pieces have been praised for their intense, submerged language and have been exhibited in prestigious venues across New York, L.A., New Jersey, and London.
The Under the Same Sun exhibition is a testament to the enduring influence of mentorship and the evolution of artistic expression. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to experience the dynamic interplay between Bell's seasoned, narrative-rich paintings and White's evocative, enigmatic creations. Both artists have made significant contributions to the art community, with Bell having served as a founding member of several art societies and as Professor Emeritus of Art at St. Ambrose University, and White gaining recognition in prominent art publications and international galleries. Under the Same Sun promises to be an unforgettable celebration of artistic brilliance and the transformative power of visual storytelling.
Under the Same Sun and the concurrent exhibition A Life Lived in Bright Light will be on display through September 28, admission is free, and more information is available by calling (563)590-2533 and visiting VoicesStudios.org.
