Art Talks and Opening Reception: March 10, 10 a.m. & 4 p.m.
Beréskin Gallery & Art Academy, 2967 State Street, Bettendorf IA
Beginning March 10 and lasting through April 28, Bettendorf's Beréskin Gallery & Art Academy will be aglow with the outdoor photography of Czech Republic native Radim Schreiber, whose works will light up the venue in the haunting and beautiful exhibit The Magical Glow of Fireflies.
A nature photographer based in Fairfield, Iowa, Schreiber grew up in the Czech Republic where he doesn't recall seeing many fireflies. Yet he saw thousands of them after moving to Iowa, and in 2003, his fascination with the insects became the inspiration to create a photo exhibit of fireflies in their natural environment. In 2008, advances in low-light-photography technology allowed him to finally realize his vision, and since then, Schreiber has spent his summer taking video and photographs of fireflies – numerous examples of the latter on display in the Beréskin Gallery's The Magical Glow of Fireflies exhibition.
Since earning the 2004 Outstanding Student Award in the Maharishi University of Management's fine-artts program, Schreiber has gone on to receive many additional citations, among them Second Place in the 2011 International Garden Photographer of the Year Photography Contest, First Place in the 41st Annual National Wildlife Photo Contest, and First Place in Smithsonian Magazine's 8th Annual Photo Contest. Schreiber's work has also been featured in publications including National Geographic, Smithsonian, and the Huffington Post, and showcased on NPR and Iowa Public Television.
A Magical Glow of Fireflies Art Talk for families will be held at 10 a.m. on March 10, with another Art Talk for adults and the exhibit's Opening Reception talking place at 4 p.m. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and admission is free, and more information is available by calling (563)508-4630 or visiting BereskinArtGallery.com.
