Iowa Receives $49.4 Million Payment Through Tobacco Settlement

DES MOINES, IOWA (April 22, 2020) — Tobacco companies involved in the 1998 landmark settlement have transferred about $49.4 million to the state treasury for this year's payment.

In the last 22 years, Iowa has received more than $1.3 billion in payments under the settlement. The state will continue to receive annual Master Settlement Agreement payments in perpetuity, based on the number of cigarettes sold in the United States. The MSA is the largest settlement in US history.

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller Sues Two Milwaukee Companies Over Asbestos Violations at Former Maytag Site

Atlantic Recycler Must Pay $150,000 and Clean Up Abandoned Property

DES MOINES, IOWA (February 25, 2020) — A former Atlantic vehicle recycler must pay an additional $50,000 penalty for violating environmental laws and ignoring state orders to clean up the abandoned site, a judge has ruled.

Fourth District Chief Judge Jeffrey L Larson also ruled that Jason Wright, who now lives in Colorado, is liable for future cleanup costs and could face contempt charges if he fails to comply with the order.

Vanderginst Law PC Files Class Action against Conair

MOLINE, ILLINOIS (February 20, 2020) — VanDerGinst Law PC has filed a class action lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court against Conair Corporation seeking to recover damages for injuries sustained while using its Conair Infiniti Pro Hair Styler, Series 259Y. The lawsuit alleges that Conair Corporation was aware of defects in the product which cause it to spark and/or catch fire and that it failed to warn users of the defect or the potential for injury.

Judge Orders Quad Cities Telemarketing Operation to Pay $2.6 million

DES MOINES, IOWA (February 11, 2020) — A Polk County judge has ordered a Quad Cities-based telemarketing operation to pay nearly $2.6 million and permanently banned it from doing business after finding the operation had defrauded small businesses across the nation.

Polk County District Judge Heather Lauber granted Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller’s request for summary judgment against owner Alphonso Barnum of Davenport, several of his associates, and 10 companies.

Auto Issues and Impostor Scams Top the List of Complaints to Attorney General’s Office

DES MOINES, IOWA (January 27, 2020) — For the second year in a row, auto-related problems topped all categories of complaints reported to the Iowa Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division in 2019.

Other top categories were impostor scams and complaints over media services, home improvement projects and home goods and services.

Overall complaints totaled 3,225, a 7.7% decrease from 2018. That’s the first decrease since at least 2014.

Jennifer Easler Named Iowa’s Consumer Advocate

DES MOINES — Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller has appointed Jennifer Easler as consumer advocate for regulated utility issues.  

Easler replaces Mark Schuling, who retired January 10. Schuling had served as consumer advocate since January 2011.
