ImageWashington, DC – While 90 percent of parents and guardians of children ages 8-18 think they should have a lot of responsibility for ensuring kids’ online safety, only one-third of them see themselves as “very knowledgeable” about how to educate their children to use the Internet safely and responsibly.

Bettendorf, IA, August 14, 2006:  With David Lee Roth currently on ambulance detail, it's not surprising that Mike Lust and TIGHT PHANTOMZ, off Southern Records, are unleashed and most definitely unchained on their first full length album, "Crazy When Wet". This follows the "Nightfool" ep (released April 2004) and is one mother load of a boogie album complete with a mid-lick swinging drop kick to the face of convention, and a shady hoochie-koo shuffle step that would make the Starchild himself proud. This is fair warning people, oh yes. TIGHT PHANTOMZ are fresh outta the back of the limo, and are here to flaunt their dirty sinners' swing.

TIGHT PHANTOMZ came together in 2003, when guitarist/vocalist Mike Lust and drummer Jay Dandurand reemerged from the ashes of their noted Chicago outfit, LUSTRE KING. Adding Cale Arthur's wrecking-ball-to-the-low-end bass, the Phantomz line up was solidified. Their shows quickly became legendary. No audience was safe. Everyone was being violated and annihilated by the Phantomz five fingered James Brown dominance of Lust, The Entertainer, coupled with the mindset that whatever your troubles were, whatever pinned you down, didn't matter, because it was time to fucking get it on! Like I said, it's no surprise.

Recorded at the bands' owned and operated Phantom Manor Studio (where Lust recorded Ten Grand, Sweep The Leg Johnny, William Elliott Whitmore, We Ragazzi and a hundred others), "Crazy When Wet" reveals the Phantomz aren't satisfied with the same old rock and roll pick up lines. These nine originals and the cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross", are a snotty blast of attitude and classic rock bombast, with the frenzy of a house party overrun by the sweaty city kids that came to steal your car and meet your sister. This ain't no indie-hipster fashion campaign, this is pure 100% bravado-fueled rock heroics with a tip of the hat to ZZ Top, and a lick and a promise to those, literally, about to rock!

A lick and a promise indeed! In early 2004, TIGHT PHANTOMZ was voted Best Rock Entertainer at the 23rd Annual Chicago Music Awards and have recently been invited to participate in Brendan Canty's "Burn To Shine" DVD series with other Chicago artists such as Wilco, Tortoise and Shellac, just to name a few.

See Tight Phantomz at Penguin’s on Friday August 18. Show starts at 10 P.M., 18 and up, $6 Cover. Also playing local bands Meth & Goats and Leon. For more information visit www.myspace.com/penguinslivemusic.

OPEN CITIES ANNOUNCES 2006-07 FILM SERIES

The Open Cities Film Society has a new name :  Open Cities Cinema.  “We wanted a name that reflects our new mission statement—The Quad-Cities’ premiere window to the world, projecting culture, education, and entertainment,” says the organization’s incoming president, Ted Priester.

The upcoming season also reflects other changes, including a new venue. Open Cities’ 28th season begins Saturday, September 23 and will feature 27 films in four categories:  Award-Winners, British, Favorites, and Quad-City Premieres.  “The Quad-City Premieres movies will be noted films from 2005 and 2006 that haven’t been shown in the area, now that there’s no longer a Brew & View or Rocket Theatre to fill that need,” says Priester. That category includes Junebug, Tristram Shandy, and Water. The season opener will be the Scandinavian classic Babette’s Feast, with other features including M*A*S*H, A Clockwork Orange, The Third Man, Lone Star, A Room with a View, and Stop Making Sense.

The new venue for the Open Cities Cinema season is the Davenport Public Library at Fairmount Street.  The viewing room has 80 seats, and patrons have access to a well-lit parking lot and refreshments from the library’s Slanted Straw Café.   All films will be shown on Saturday nights, beginning at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:45.  Seating is on a first-come, first served basis.  Suggested donations are $5.00 for individual tickets, $3.00 for students showing a college ID, and $45.00 for season tickets, which are available at the door or by calling 563-322-5386.  More information is available at the Open Cities Cinema’s new website:  www.opencitiescinema.org

Besides the film series, Open Cities Cinema has other projects in the works, including co-sponsoring the Avati Film Festival at the Figge Art Museum September 15-17.

Rude Punch to perform at Ya Maka My Weekend

Rude Punch, a high energy Reggae/Rock band out of the Quad Cities, will be performing at Ya Maka My Weekend Saturday August 19th at 12:00-2:30 on the East stage.  Come enjoy original Reggae/Rock tunes as well as covers from bands like Sublime, Bob Marley, Slightly Stoopid, etc..  Come enjoy music from the islands with Rude Punch.

The Adaptors and Elbow at RIBCO Saturday August 26th, doors at 9pm.

From the mid 90's when "indie" was still a fresh word, comes a reunion of two bands that is long overdue. The Adaptors, which included 3 of the 4 members of Driver of the Year, and Donnie Bobb (the Vow, Parlet, The Paradise Boys) will take the stage at RIBCO on Saturday August 26th with old friends Elbow, who play(ed) an unrelenting form of cosmic, long haired post punk/pre metal not often heard today, but much needed.

It's been over ten years since these bands lit up the places like The Cavern, The Slowfish, or RIBCO together in front of hordes of beer swilling, angst ridden Quad Citizens. Well, they're back and it's for a good cause, so put on your Dinosaur Jr. shirt, grab the Otis cassette from the shoebox, and get down to RIBCO for a garaunteed helluva good time!

Dear Editor, Iowans for Medical Marijuana will be holding a public forum on Saturday, September 23, in the auditorium of the State Historical Building just west of the State Capitol Building. The topic will be medical marijuana legislation in Iowa and in the United States. We have three speakers so far, (1) Marty Ryan, Legislative Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa; (2) George McMahon (one of five remaining patients in the United States and a resident of Iowa who has been receiving 300 marijuana cigarettes per month from the federal government for the past 15 years); (3) and State Representative Ed Fallon who received 25% of the votes for Governor in the last primary election in June 2006. We invite you to participate in a discussion of state and federal policy regarding the medical use of marijuana and the recent decision in Iowa v. Bonjour, No. 160 / 03-0309, SUPREME COURT OF IOWA, 694 N.W.2d 511 (Iowa 2005) (http://www.iowanorml.org/Modules/NewsManager/ShowNews.aspx?NewsID=48). Marijuana was outlawed by the federal government in 1970 because it contains a psychoactive drug called THC. Since that time, THC has been found to be a safe and effective medicine, much safer than drugs made from other plants such as cocaine or morphine. THC was moved from Schedule I to Schedule II by the DEA in 1986: 51 Fed. Reg. 17,476, and THC was moved from Schedule II to Schedule III by the DEA in 1999, 64 Fed. Reg. 35928. Cocaine and morphine are in Schedule II as are the plants they are made from. Marijuana remains in Schedule I despite the fact that the only reason it was put there no longer exists. The last time the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) (the official agency charged with reviewing marijuana's status by the statute which created marijuana's current scheduling) held a scheduling hearing on marijuana, the DEA chief administrative law judge held that, "There is no record in the extensive medical literature describing a proven, documented cannabis-induced fatality." DEA Docket No. 86-22, Sept. 6, 1988, at page 56. "A smoker would theoretically have to consume nearly 1,500 pounds of marijuana within about 15 minutes to induce a lethal response." Ibid. at. 57. "In practical terms, marijuana cannot induce a lethal response as a result of drug-related toxicity." Ibid. at 57. The judge went on to say that eating marijuana is safer than eating raw potatoes or aspirin, and "it is physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to induce death." Ibid. at 58. "Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man." Ibid. at 58-59. Attached is the flyer from the 2000 Medical Marijuana Conference hosted by the University of Iowa Medical School and Nursing School.  We want to know when the legislators are going to follow the lead of the University of Iowa and create legislation that will assist people using this plant for medical purposes. I'm also enclosing a flyer I handed to Jeff Lamberti and Leonard Boswell at yesterday's congressional candidate debate at the UAW. Please help us promote this forum.  If you know any legislators that would be willing to participate on one of our state or federal panels, please invite them to participate. Thank you! Carl Olsen, Iowans for Medical MarijuanaGeorge McMahon, Bode, Iowa (one of five people currently receiving marijuana from the federal government)

Barbara Douglass, Storm Lake, Iowa (one of five people currently receiving marijuana from the federal government)
