Representing the class of 2014, Carlisle Evans Peck spoke about the importance of a liberal arts education in living a fulfilling life, "These four beautiful years of liberal arts college were not to prepare us for security and dependability in a single, stable career," he said. "They have been to prepare us for life in the forest. The purpose of this education is to create adventurous, creative, intelligent individuals who will shake that machine to its foundations."

During the ceremonies, honorary degrees were presented to two individuals: Congresswoman Cheri Bustos and Robert Ontiveros, founder and chairman of Group O.

ROCK ISLAND, IL (05/02/2014)(readMedia)-- Jordan Kirkbride of Rock Island co-curated "Whistler and His Context" as part of her Senior Inquiry for art history. The exhibition examines the works of James McNeill Whistler and artists working before, during and after his career, in an effort to understand Whistler's life and art in their context.

This exhibition reflects the sustained research on Whistler from the Centre for Whistler Criticism. The center's mission is to promote scholarship related to Whistler, and to create a digital archive of lifetime criticism of Whistler and his art. Kirkbride was afforded the rare undergraduate opportunity to research original archival collections from such international centers as the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Glasgow.

Kirkbride will present her senior inquiry paper on May 13 at 7 p.m. in Room 12, Bergendoff Hall of Fine Arts (3701 7th Ave., Rock Island, Illinois).

ROCK ISLAND, IL (04/09/2014)(readMedia)-- Twelve Augustana seniors majoring in art will display their work at the Augustana Teaching Museum of Art (3703 7th Ave., Rock Island, Ill.), as part of New Departures: Senior Art Show. The exhibition opens Tuesday, April 29, and runs through Sunday, May 25. The museum is open from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, and closed for final exams May 19-22.

The show exhibits work by studio art and graphic design majors who graduate this year. Displaying artwork in a variety of media, from painting and photography to quilting and video, the exhibition is the culmination of the students' Senior Inquiry process and overall academic experience. As the capstone project for every graduating Augustana student, Senior Inquiry encourages seniors to demonstrate the critical thinking and communication skills they've developed in their major and throughout their liberal arts education, and to reflect on the value of their work for their future profession and for the common good.

Each student has been guided by a faculty mentor and has worked countless hours to create and professionally display his or her original, completed work and progress during the past four years. The exhibiting artists will discuss their work in the Augustana Teaching Museum of Art's Centennial Hall gallery during a gallery talk at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7. The public also is invited to the graduation day reception for the exhibition from 12:45-2 p.m. on Sunday, May 25.

Projects by students from our area featured in the exhibition include :

ROCK ISLAND, IL (02/10/2014)(readMedia)-- The Augustana Symphonic Band will tour Japan for the first time from February 21-March 4. The band will perform four concerts while in Japan, and will perform a home concert on Saturday, March 15 at 8 p.m. in Augustana's Centennial Hall (3703 7th Ave., Rock Island).

The Augustana Symphonic Band is the college's oldest music ensemble, dating back to 1874. The band held its first formal concert in Clark's Hall in Paxton, Illinois, prior to the college's move to its Rock Island campus in 1875. Dr. James Lambrecht, professor of music and director of bands at Augustana, has directed the band since 1988.

Lambrecht is no stranger to Japan. He performed there as a graduate student under the direction of Ray Cramer, who directed the Indiana University Wind Ensemble and is a regular guest conductor at the Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo. Lambrecht has followed in Cramer's footsteps, having served as guest conductor at Musashino twice, with another appointment scheduled for this coming summer.

Mitchell Carter '14, a music education major from Mundelein, Ill., said, "It's a really exciting opportunity to be able to continue this tradition of sharing our music. Our program for this tour is a unique blend of works with ties to both the United States and Japan, including Julie Giroux's Symphony IV, which is based on famous Japanese woodprints, as well as classic Western band literature, such as a handful of Sousa marches and Holst's First Suite in E-flat."

While in Japan, the band will perform concerts and participate in exchanges with other bands in Osaka and Tokyo.

The following students from your area will tour with the Augustana Symphonic Band:

Ingrid Schneider of Davenport (52806)

Andrew Bainter of Coal Valley (61240)

Lizandra Gomez-Ramirez of Rock Island (61201)
