WHAT: 12th Annual Xstream Cleanup

WHEN: 8:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2015

WHO: Over 1,000 volunteers of all ages, some working in teams and representing businesses and organizations throughout the Quad-Cities

WHERE: Over 35 total sites are included for cleanups in the following areas:

•                    Iowa: Bettendorf, Davenport, LeClaire and rural Scott County

•                    Illinois: Hampton, Milan, Moline, Rock Island and Silvis

DAVENPORT, IA–Next week Waste Commission of Scott County will present information to Bettendorf and Davenport City Councils about proposed changes to the Scott Area Recycling Center and associated municipal recycling programs.

The Commission will present to Bettendorf City Council at 5 p.m. Aug. 3rd and to Davenport City Council at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 5th. During future meetings, councils are expected to consider formal resolutions in support of a plan to change from dual- to single-stream recycling. The plan was developed by the Commission and its partners in Scott County, including Bettendorf and Davenport.

"We`re excited about providing an easier, better way to recycle. Single-stream recycling will allow residents in Davenport and Bettendorf to recycle more materials in one container. Our community and our environment will reap great benefits from this change," said Kathy Morris, Commission Director.

Single-stream recycling will allow residents to recycle additional plastic items (#1-#7) and gable-top cartons, thereby keeping these valuable materials out of the Scott Area Landfill. Residents no longer will be required to sort paper items from containers, and all recyclables will be placed into one large recycling cart with wheels.

On July 14th, the Commission requested that the Scott County Board of Supervisors issue bonds on its behalf for facility and equipment changes. The Board approved a resolution relating to the issuance of the bonds July 30th.

The Commission and its partners started the first municipal recycling program in the Quad-Cities in 1995. Over the past 20 years, the Scott Area Recycling Center has recycled over 400 million pounds of cardboard, paper, plastic, metal and glass. The Commission anticipates that program changes will double the amount of material currently recycled at the facility each year.

Waste Commission of Scott County is an inter-governmental agency formed in 1972 whose mission is to provide environmentally sound and economically feasible solid waste management for Scott County. All Commission programs are funded by user fees paid at its facilities, and not through tax dollars.

QUAD-CITIES–Xstream Cleanup, presented by Group O and Riverboat Development Authority, is seeking hundreds of volunteers to clean up about 35 sites in the Quad-Cities area on Saturday, August 8 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Cleanup sites are located in Bettendorf, Davenport and LeClaire, Iowa; and Hampton, Milan, Moline, Rock Island and Silvis, Illinois.

Volunteers can choose to participate in light-duty cleanup, heavy-duty cleanup, or removal of invasive plants and other vegetation. Removal of invasive plants continues to be an important part of the cleanup because these harmful species negatively affect water quality in the Quad-Cities and beyond.

No previous cleanup experience is necessary, and supplies will be provided. A parent or guardian must accompany volunteers under the age of 18.

In an effort to reduce waste from the event, cases of bottled water will not be provided at cleanup sites this year. Volunteers will receive a reusable, BPA-free water bottle as a token of gratitude for their efforts. Event-themed T-shirts will not be given away as in previous years.

Xstream Cleanup is made possible by generous support provided by the following: Group O, Riverboat Development Authority, Alcoa, Triumph Community Bank, Iowa American Water, Eastern Iowa Grain Inspection and Weighing Service, Rock Island County Waste Management Agency, Alter Metal Recycling, DHL Global Forwarding, McCarthy Bush Corporation, MidAmerican Energy, Quad City Conservation Alliance, Sears Seating, Wallace's Garden Center, Radish Magazine, and Midas Auto Systems Experts.

Suggest a cleanup site–and vote for your favorite T-shirt color!

QUAD-CITIES–The date has been set and planning is underway for Xstream Cleanup, the Quad-Cities' annual, volunteer-based cleanup of area waterways.

The cleanup will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014. Online registration will open by July 1 at www.xstreamcleanup.org.

Again this year, organizers are looking for new cleanup sites and encourage members of the community to make suggestions. If a site is dirty, litter-ridden or host to illegal dumping, organizers want to hear about it. To make a suggestion, send an e-mail to info@xstreamcleanup.org or call (563) 468-4218.

"Xstream Cleanup gives people an opportunity to get their hands dirty and show their commitment to the community. Each year hundreds of volunteers pick up, drag out, and haul away unwanted trash and debris from our waterways. This event proves that as a community, we're willing to sweat together to protect and improve water quality where we live," says Curtis Lundy, event chair.

Community members also are invited to visit the Xstream Cleanup Facebook page to vote for their favorite color for this year's volunteer T-shirts. Color options are Chestnut (light brown), Gravel (light gray), or Yellow Haze (light yellow). One vote per person will be counted. The deadline to vote is 5 p.m. Friday, May 30.

Xstream Cleanup began in 2004 as a small-scale cleanup of Duck Creek. Over the years, the event has grown to engage over 1,000 volunteers cleaning up about 40 sites around the Quad-Cities each year. The cleanup is now in its eleventh year.
