Judge Orders Quad Cities Telemarketing Operation to Pay $2.6 million

DES MOINES, IOWA (February 11, 2020) — A Polk County judge has ordered a Quad Cities-based telemarketing operation to pay nearly $2.6 million and permanently banned it from doing business after finding the operation had defrauded small businesses across the nation.

Polk County District Judge Heather Lauber granted Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller’s request for summary judgment against owner Alphonso Barnum of Davenport, several of his associates, and 10 companies.

Auto Issues and Impostor Scams Top the List of Complaints to Attorney General’s Office

DES MOINES, IOWA (January 27, 2020) — For the second year in a row, auto-related problems topped all categories of complaints reported to the Iowa Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division in 2019.

Other top categories were impostor scams and complaints over media services, home improvement projects and home goods and services.

Overall complaints totaled 3,225, a 7.7% decrease from 2018. That’s the first decrease since at least 2014.

Jennifer Easler Named Iowa’s Consumer Advocate

DES MOINES — Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller has appointed Jennifer Easler as consumer advocate for regulated utility issues.  

Easler replaces Mark Schuling, who retired January 10. Schuling had served as consumer advocate since January 2011.

Seller of "Miracle Scraper," Auto Club Agrees to Refund Money to Iowans

DES MOINES, IOWA (December 23, 2019) — All Iowans who purchased the “Miracle Scraper” ice-scraper — including those unknowingly enrolled in an auto-membership club — will receive complete refunds under a settlement reached with the Iowa Attorney General’s Office.

Federal Grant to Benefit Problem-Solving Courts Serving Iowans Statewide

DES MOINES, IOWA (December 9, 2019) — The Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded the Iowa Judicial Branch a three-year, $500,000 grant to establish uniform standards for Iowa’s adult problem-solving courts and to implement a long-term strategy to create a statewide system of support and accountability. Implementation of the strategy began with the recent hiring of a Statewide Problem Solving Court Coordinator.

DAVENPORT, IOWA (October 21, 2019) — Scott County Supervisor Ken Croken* announced today that he will travel to the southern border in order to provide legal services to refugees and other asylum seekers now detained at the Karnes County Family Residential Center, located about 60 miles south of San Antonio, Texas.
