DUBUQUE, IOWA (April 21, 2025) — The University of Dubuque will confer upon Dana Rae Yannacci Bullock, a doctor of human letters, honoris causa, in recognition of her leadership and service as the longest serving first lady in UD’s history from 1998 to 2024. Dana will receive the honorary degree at the University of Dubuque Spring Commencement, which will begin at 1PM, Saturday, April 26, 2025, on campus in the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center.
Dana graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, with a bachelor’s degree in history. She began her career as a grants manager in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Washington School of Medicine. In 1996, she relocated to Dubuque with her husband, Jeffrey, who became UD’s eleventh president, where she continued her work in grants management with the City of Dubuque.
After Noah, Luke, and Seth were born, Dana began her vocation as an engaged volunteer in the community, with her sons’ schools, and at the University of Dubuque. She became a passionate advocate for children with learning and brain health challenges in the school district. Her commitment extended to organizations such as Hillcrest Family Services and Stonehill Communities.
Dana’s most dedicated professional work and service was focused on the University of Dubuque and its Mission. From 1998 to 2024, she served as the University of Dubuque’s first lady—the longest in the institution’s history. As an integral person in campus life, she welcomed hundreds of students, faculty, staff, trustees, dignitaries, and guests to campus and into her home.
Dana served on many University committees and invested countless hours in establishing McCormick House, the University’s guest home, and the renovation and expansion of two residences of the president, the first on Overview Court and, most recently, the newest residence on Fremont Avenue.
Known for her deep faith, perseverance, and compassionate spirit, Dana has been a steadfast partner to Jeffrey and a devoted mother to her three sons. She has left a lasting imprint on the University of Dubuque and the wider community.
