BETTENDORF, IOWA (September 18, 2024) — The Downtown Bettendorf Organization (DBO) is celebrating the first renewal of its Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District (SSMID). The SSMID will go into effect for five more years.

"With 53% of property owners representing 71% of the value of downtown Bettendorf in support of renewing the SSMID, we are excited to begin another 5-year term," said Ryan Jantzi, Executive Director of DBO. "We are continuing our work to create a prosperous Downtown Bettendorf where all can thrive."

A Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District is defined as a geographic area where commercial, multi-family residential (three-plus units) and industrial property-owners pay an additional property tax to fund improvements and enhanced services within district boundaries. DBO is responsible for oversight and implementation of the tax funds generated by the district.

“The SSMID was approved via unanimous vote by the Bettendorf City Council,” said Kyle Carter, Vice President, Place Management at the Chamber. “The smooth nature of this approval process is a credit to Ryan Jantzi’s stewardship and the incredible trust he’s earned with both private and public stakeholders over the years.”

Funds collected would be used for any of the following purposes within the SSMID:

  • Enhanced maintenance, cleaning and upkeep of public spaces;
  • Graffiti removal on public property and private buildings;
  • Development, marketing, promotion and management of activities; and
  • Capital, physical or other improvements designed to enhance the image, appearance and functionality;
  • Research and planning services;
  • Activities and operations benefiting the District under any agreements with the City of Bettendorf or other public or quasi-public entities;
  • Promotion and advancement of the SSMID, including the use of public spaces, services and improvements, policies and practices, business retention and attraction, and activities and events; and
  • Other activities intended to develop or enhance the SSMID.
