ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (May 1, 2019) — Gilda’s Club is hosting a FREE workshop for anyone impacted by cancer titled “Frankly Speaking About Cancer: Melanoma” on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, 5:30–7:30PM at the Martin Luther King Jr Community Center (630 9th Street, Rock Island, IL).

Led by Naurin Ahmad MD, this free workshop offers information on Melanoma. Melanoma begins in melanocytes — the cells that produce the pigment melanin that colors the skin, hair, and eyes. Melanoma affects over 75,000 people in the United States every year. It can develop from a mole and become skin cancer.

The number of people who have received a melanoma diagnosis has been rapidly on the rise in the United States for the last 40 years. While melanoma is less common than other skin cancers, it is the most serious type of skin cancer and can occur on any skin surface.

This workshop will cover:

  • How melanomas arise;
  • Who is at risk;
  • Treatment options; and
  • Potential side effects.
