Saturday, October 28, 2 and 7:30 p.m.
Adler Theatre, 136 East Third Street, Davenport IA
Arriving in tandem with the 30th anniversary of its film-musical counterpart, Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage will fill the Adler auditorium with beloved songs from 1987's beloved movie, including the Oscar-, Golden Globe-, and Grammy-winning “(I've Had) The Time of My Life” smash originally recorded by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.
The first film to sell more than a million copies on home video and the inspiration for two multi-platinum-selling albums, Dirty Dancing is the iconic tale of Baby and Johnny (played on-screen by Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze), two independent spirits from different worlds whose Catskill Mountains romance leads to the most challenging, triumphant summer of their lives. A word-of-mouth hit that went on to make $214 million off a $6 million budget, the film is enshrined in pop-culture history for its stars' chemistry and quotable dialogue (“Nobody puts baby in a corner”), and for the song score that blends early smashes such as The Ronettes' “Be My Baby” with '80s pop hits including Eric Carmen's “Hungry Eyes.”
Adapted for the theatre in 2004, Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story features those tunes alongside other favorites from the film soundtrack, among them The Contours' “Do You Love Me?”, Bruce Channel's “Hey! Baby,” The Shirelles' “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” and Swayze's “She's Like the Wind,” which topped Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart in 1987. And the musical's reviews have found the Chicago Tribune decreeing it “sensual and charming,” with London's Sunday Express raving, “This crowd-pleasing stage adaptation hits the jackpot.”
Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage's October 28 performances take place at 2 and 7:30 p.m., admission is $40.50-68, and tickets can be reserved by calling (800)745-3000 or visiting AdlerTheatre.com.
