(ROCK ISLAND, IL) NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative is expanding its ovarian cancer awareness and education efforts with the help of local artist, Donna Young, and Isabel Bloom Inc. On September 16th, Isabel Bloom will host NormaLeah Day at their studio and showroom located at 736 Federal Street, Davenport, Iowa from 10am-1pm.
Earlier this year, Young created the teal Winged Beauty butterfly to support NormaLeah’s education programs. The butterfly features teal colored wings and an ovarian cancer ribbon on the base. The placard accompanying the figurine reads, “The butterfly is proof that you can go through a great deal of darkness yet become something beautiful.” Anyone impacted by this silent disease will find serenityand hope in this beautiful piece of art.
In appreciation for all who support NormaLeah, families are invited out to the Isabel Bloom Showroom and Studio for a FREE day of crafts, ice cream courtesy of Vibrant Credit Union and raffles. Winged Beauty will be available for purchase, or customers can bring in previously purchased statues; Young will be on site to personally sign them. Join NormaLeah in celebration of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
“It’s estimated that 80% of women have never talked to their doctors about this disease” said Jodie Kavensky, founder and CEO of NormaLeah. “We are opening a dialogue between women and their medical providers about it. All women and those who love them need to know the subtle symptoms, assess their personal risk, and learn how to seek medical attention for the best outcome.”
Ovarian cancer has long been considered a “silent killer” because the symptoms are subtle and advance slowly. It is hard to detect, difficult to treat and there is no screening test or widely-used detection test. All women are at risk for ovarian cancer and approximately 1 in 75 women will develop the disease during her lifetime.
NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative, headquartered in Rock Island, enriches lives through early detection education, patient support services and research funding for ovarian cancer. The organization honors the memory of Mrs. Kavensky's mother, Norma Yecies Shagrin and her aunt, Leah Yecies Hantman, whose lives were cut short by this deadly disease. “Sisters share a lot of things, but ovarian cancer should never be any of them,” Kavensky said.
