Dear Friend,

Far too many Americans have been touched by breast cancer, whether the disease has struck a family member, spouse, friend or colleague. It is estimated that this year alone, 246,660 women and 2,600 men are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer. As you may know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During this month, we recognize the importance of prevention and early detection methods, like getting annual mammograms, that can dramatically improve the chances of identifying early signs of breast cancer. There are several steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing breast cancer, including avoiding exposure to carcinogens, limiting alcohol use, and exercising regularly.

As a member of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues and the House Cancer Caucus, I firmly believe it is vital that all Iowans have access to life-saving preventative measures, and that is why I am a proud cosponsor of the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act (H.R.1197). This legislation would establish a commission that would recommend initiatives and strategies to work towards identifying the most effective preventative measures and finding a cure. I recently spoke in favor of this bill on the House floor and requested that Speaker Ryan bring it up for a vote. To view my remarks, please click on the video below.

This month, let us help save lives by raising awareness about this disease, and working to prevent, detect, and cure breast cancer once and for all.

Sincerely,
