SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) encourages all Illinoisans to “Take the LEAD” and observe FOP National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (LEAD) on Saturday, January 9.

“Law enforcement is usually a thankless job, but it doesn't have to be,” said Illinois FOP President Chris Southwood. “On January 9 let's all make an effort to let these brave men and women know they are appreciated for what they do for us. A simple thank you costs nothing and means a great deal.”

The FOP has offered the following suggestions as way to observe National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day:

  • “Like” your local police agency's Facebook page.

  • Change your social media profile picture to an image supporting law enforcement or share a positive experience you've had with a police officer.

  • If you see a police officer, thank them personally.

  • Wear blue clothing or display a blue light in your home or business.

  • Send a card or letter of support to your local police department.

  • Organize a local event to support law enforcement officers.

  • Share the LEAD public service announcement at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uK-0UvwasUc.

The Fraternal Order of Police, founded in 1915, is the largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers in the United States. With a proud tradition of officers representing officers, the FOP is the most respected and most recognized police organization in the country. The Illinois FOP, chartered in 1963, is the second largest State Lodge, proudly representing more than 32,000 active duty and retired police officers - more than 10 percent of all FOP members nationwide.
