· In San Francisco last week, a magical collective of musicians and promoters held the 10th annual Noise Pop celebration, a loose and loving gathering of tribes, basking in the best of modern music. The six-day affair featured more than 80 artists and bands, including Azure Ray, Beachwood Sparks, Big Star, Daniel Johnston, Death Cab for Cutie, Folk Implosion, Guided by Voices, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Modest Mouse, Paula Frazer, Stratford 4, The Donnas, The New Pornographers, and The Posies. Well, wipe away your tears if you missed it, young thing, as this Tuesday brings a two-CD set to complement the occasion, courtesy of the fine folks from the Amazing Grease imprint. The package highlights artists that have been part of the Noise Pop family for the past decade, and many of the 43 tracks are exclusive to the set - live, unreleased, or forthcoming from new albums. Represented artists include The Flaming Lips, Guided by Voices, The Fastbacks, Neko Case, Preston School of Industry, Overwhelming Colorfast, Creeper Lagoon, Track Star, Snowmen, The Court & Spark, Stratford 4, Oranger, Superchunk, Spoon, Call & Response, and Beulah. Proceeds benefit the Popular Noise Foundation, a not-for-profit arts foundation hell-bent on preserving the music community of the San Francisco Bay area.

· Music Video Distributors' stunning rap-umentary, entitled Through the Years of Hip-Hop Volume 1: Graffiti, is a joyous salute and celebration of the architects of the scratching, breaking, and cold cuttin' sound. This volume of a planned four-part DVD and VHS series focuses on the art that accompanied the music - aerosol cans of Krylon spray paint that tagged the city, from train cars to brick walls, and eventually the high-class art world. All the greats are represented in interview and commentary - the "writers," the critics, and the players - all pioneers in a truly American urban art form. Seven rare rap videos pad out the film, including Run DMC's "Rock Box," Dana Dane's "Nightmares," and Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock's "It Takes Two." Highly recommended.
