Arriving in advance of Halloween, the latest book by local authors Michael McCarty and Mark McLaughlin will explore roughly two dozen purportedly haunted locales in Ghosts of the Quad Cities, with the co-writers, on September 28, appearing at Davenport's The Book Rack to sign copies of this new work highlighting the supernatural histories of many of our area's most well-known sites.

Ballet Quad Cities' 2019-20 season will open with three performances of the debuting presentation MusicMoves, a joyous collection of dance vignettes being staged September 13 through 15. But the start of a new season isn't the only thing new about the professional dance company's latest production, which will also boast all-new choreography, a new venue (Augustana College's Brunner Theatre Center), and, in the piece “Shake the Muse,” even a new approach to creating a dance.

A premier convention for fans of all things horror, the Midwest Monster Fest takes over Moline's Spotlight Event Center on September 14 and 15 – a terror- and fun-filled weekend filled with special guests, vendors, panel discussions, screenings, contests, challenges, and, in celebration of the movie's 45th anniversary, appearances by John Dugan, Teri McMinn, and Ed Neal of Tobe Hooper's 1974 genre classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

One of the most popular and lauded illusionists in modern history, master prestidigitator Criss Angel brings his new touring sensation RAW: The Mindfreak Unplugged to Davenport's Adler Theatre on September 10, treating patrons to Angel’s famous sleight-of-hand street magic, astounding feats of mentalism, and some of his most iconic illusions.

Appearing locally to discuss her most recent book, 2019's Pulitzer Prize nominee The Great Believers, Chicago-based author Rebecca Makkai delivers a presentation at the Moline Public Library on September 9, the New York Times Book Review having called her latest literary triumph “an absorbing and emotionally riveting story about what it's like to live during times of crisis.”

An annual Labor Day-weekend tradition blasts into the District of Rock Island in this year's Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix, the August 31 and September 1 event in which thousands will cheer as hundreds of racing-kart drivers traverse the tree-lined streets at speeds close to 100 MPH.

Alternating Currents is an area celebration of the finest in art, music, comedy, and film. But from August 22 through 25, the weekend festival also has events scheduled in downtown Davenport that don't precisely fit into any of those four categories – including children's activities, sporting entertainments, forums, sales, and more.

Nearly 20 local, regional, and national comedians will be bringing the funny to this year's Alternating Currents festival, with August 23 and 24 standup sets – plus one hilariously awful movie – scheduled to make patrons roar with laughter at four venues in downtown Davenport.

Two venues in downtown Rock Island will co-host one exciting literary event when the Midwest Writing Center presents readings and a release party for the annual literary magazine The ATLAS, the latest volume of which will, on August 15, be showcased in a late-afternoon event at the Rock Island Public Library and an evening celebration at the neighboring Rozz-Tox.

A day of outdoor fun culminating in an attempt to break a pair of Guinness World Records is set for August 17, when River Action hosts the 10th-annual celebration of paddle sports Floatzilla, with participants and spectators gathering at Rock Island's Sunset Park to see if the Quad Cities can boast the world's “Largest Raft of Canoes and Kayaks” and “Largest Simultaneous Kayak Launch.”
