Held in conjunction with the German American Heritage Center's current exhibition The White Rose: The Student Resistance Against Hitler, Munich 1942-1943, noted scholar and speaker Dr. Jud Newborn will deliver the October 21 presentation Speaking Truth to Power: The White Rose, recounting how Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans – formerly fanatical Hitler Youth leaders – transformed to become icons of civil courage and the greatest heroes of the German anti-Nazi resistance.

One of the funniest female voices in comedy today will take the stage at the Rhythm City Casino Resort Event Center on October 28 when the Davenport venue hosts One Night with Nikki Glaser, an evening of hysterical observational comedy with the film, TV, and podcasting talent who currently stars on E! television's reality series Welcome Home, Nikki Glaser?

Described by comedian, podcast host, and New York Times bestselling author Marc Maron as “a gonzo warrior” and “one of the great American wild men,” standup comedian Kreischer brings his national tour to Moline's Vibrant Arena at the MARK on October 28, his recent credits including the podcasts 2 Bears, 1 Cave and Bertcast and the popular Netflix specials Secret Time and Hey Big Boy.

If the far reaches of your clothes closets happen to house bell bottoms, peasant blouses, beaded chokers, and feathered necklaces, you may think there's nowhere you can safely go in an outfit composed of such apparel – at least not without terrifying people. Offered as a special presentation by the World Affairs Council of the Quad Cities, the timely lecture program A Special Journey to Ukraine will be presented at the Bettendorf Public Library on October 25, with Ukraine native Lyuda Lyashenko describing her April visit to the Eastern European country as she helped deliver medical supplies to those suffering in Ukraine's current war with Russia.

An outdoor celebration of German music, food, and culture will take place at Rock Island's Hauberg Civic Center on October 22, with Davenport's German American Heritage Center co-presenting the second-annual Oktoberfest Quad Cities, a day filled with games, children's activities, the crowning of the festival king and queen, and music from the German band Die Musikmeisters.

Presented on October 20 as part of the Davenport Public Library's 3rd Thursday at Hoover's Presidential Library & Museum series, the virtual program A Hoover Homecoming Photo Album, August 1928 will find Iowa City's Paul Juhl highlighting the "homecoming" visit that Herbert Hoover, his wife, and their two sons made to Iowa during the summer of 1928, a trip taken not long after Herbert received his nomination as the Republican nominee for the presidency.

A nationally lauded composer and revered area conductor will take part in a special virtual conversation hosted by Davenport's Figge Art Museum, the October 20 event finding Jake Heggie and Ernesto Estigarribia discussing the two-act chamber opera Two Remain (Out Of Darkness), which will be performed by the Quad City Symphony Orchestra on October 22.

A widely respected newspaper editor, book author, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Art Cullen will speak at the Davenport Public Library's Main Branch on October 19, his presentation and subsequent question and answer session focusing on his nonfiction Storm Lake: A Chronicle of Change, Resilience, & Hope from a Heartland Newspaper that Kirkus Reviews called an "impassioned, significant book from a newsman who made a difference.”

Presented as part of the Bettendorf Public Library's “Community Connections” series, a number of Iowa's most notorious and horrific unsolved killings will be explored in the October 14 program Fiend Incarnate: Villisca Axe Murders of 1912, with Dr. Edgar Epperly discussing his book of the same title and the Midwestern mystery that continues to puzzle professional and amateur true-crime investigators.
