MOLINE, Ill., Oct. 1, 2010 - An estimated 5.7 million people receive emergency food assistance each week, and more than one in every three households experience very low food security, according to the 2010 Hunger in America Report. Today, Tyson Foods donated over 28,000 pounds of much-needed protein to River Bend Foodbank, a member of Feeding America. Online Contest Gives Supporters Chance to Award Grants up to $300,000 by Daily Voting

Van Nuys, CA - It won't cost a dime in October to help military service members and their families. Thanks to Operation Gratitude and Operation Homefront, patriotic Americans can provide valuable support with the click of a mouse. ROCK ISLAND, Ill., - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and other federal, state and local agencies are conducting a meeting of the Regional Flood Risk Management Team (RFRMT) on October 15, at the Stoney Creek Inn, Moline, Ill. The meeting takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Blackhawk Conference Room.

The media are invited to meet with Team officials from noon - 12:15 p.m. to discuss the RFRMT and its initiatives.

The Corps is working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other federal, state and local agencies as a Regional Flood Risk Management Team providing a uniform approach across the Upper Mississippi River Basin in five states. The team is an umbrella organization designed to look at flood plain management at a regional level and to collaboratively develop a regional approach to optional long-term flood risk reduction approaches, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life by minimizing damages and increasing safety. Flood risk management is a shared responsibility and is a partnership among federal, state and local government agencies, local authorities and private landowners.

Monticello, IA– On Sunday, October 10, 2010, the East Central Federation and Cedar Valley Callers Association will sponsor the 21st Anniversary of the Annual Square Dance Benefit for Camp Courageous.  The calling begins at 1:30 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m. in the main lodge at Camp Courageous.

Members of U.S. House lining up to pull rug from under president's nationalization

The November election is getting closer. And so is the possibility that Obamacare - with its so-called "death panels," government intervention in health-care decisions and mandates for all consumers to buy the insurance the government specifies - simply will be repealed.

The effort has been assembled by U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, whose discharge petition would call for a new House vote on the proposal.

It needs 218 signatures of House members, and since that constitutes a majority in the 435-member House, the goal of the discharge petition likely would be accomplished, he has explained. The effort now has 173 signatures, only a few dozen short of the number required.

The plan had collected 170 signatures before the summer congressional break, but since members of Congress returned to Washington, three more names - Jim Gerlach of Pennsylvania, Gene Taylor of Mississippi and Steve Buyer of Indiana - have been added.

King also this week released a statement about Obamacare, noting that it has been six months since its adoption.

"Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi once said that Congress had to pass Obamacare so that Americans would know what was in it. Americans have now had six months to review this unconstitutional legislation, and the majorities seeking repeal continue to grow," he said.

He said more than 20 states already have filed lawsuits against Obamacare, and voters in Missouri have passed a law protecting themselves from Obama's "unconstitutional 'individual mandate.'"

"A recent survey by Rasmussen Reports concludes that 61 percent of the American public wants Obamacare repealed," King said. "Americans should urge their representatives to sign Discharge Petition No. 11 and should also insist that members of Congress pledge to withhold funding for Obamacare's implementation in future Congresses."

King also has posted a list online divided by state delegations.

The effort in the House continues gaining momentum even though it has been reported but little in the media. Under House rules, once King's discharge petition acquires the needed number of names, it would move forward even if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi vigorously opposes it.

All of the GOP representatives and 34 Democrats opposed Obamacare when it was passed on a narrow 219-212 vote earlier this year. King said 212 representatives, at least, should be in favor of overturning it, since they previously opposed it.

Then it will be up to the handful of Democrat votes that would be needed to turn from endorsement to rejection for it to advance.

He also said there are a number of Democrats who supported the nationalization plan who now are running for re-election in districts where residents oppose it.

The proposal states: "Pursuant to clause 2 of rule XV, I, Steve King of Iowa, move to discharge the Committees on Energy and Commerce, Ways and Means, Education and Labor, the Judiciary, Natural Resources, Rules, House Administration and Appropriations from the consideration of the bill (H.R. 4972) to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which was referred to said committees on March 25, 2010, in support of which motion the undersigned Members of the House of Representatives affix their signatures."

Its target is the $940 billion, or greater, bill adopted by the Democrat-controlled Congress in March.

King said he expects the numbers "to swell."

"Once the discharge petition reaches 218 signatures, Speaker Pelosi will not be able to prevent the repeal legislation from receiving, and passing, a vote on the floor," King's announcement said.

The congressman said the process may be a little complicated to rid the nation of thousands of pages of laws that a majority of voters oppose, but it can be done.

The discharge petition is first, which then can be used as a litmus test against Democrats in November, he said. The likelihood is that if the GOP returns to a majority in the House in November, while President Obama still could veto a complete repeal, the House simply could shut off funding for the program until a new president is elected in 2012, he explained.

In a related effort, almost 41,000 voices from across America are offering their encouragement to members of the House who have yet to sign the discharge petition offered by King.

The campaign is a petition drive that urges members of Congress to repeal Obamacare because of several problems:

* Whereas, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, approved by a narrow vote of the House of Representatives earlier this year, threatens to transform the U.S. health-care system from its roots in free enterprise and personal choice;

* Whereas, the act is unconstitutional because of its unprecedented requirement that Americans purchase a service;

* Whereas, the system the law would create is financially unsustainable, places personal medical decisions in the hands of bureaucrats and is likely to lead to rationing of health-care options;

* Whereas, the act is likely to result in forcing some 87 million Americans to drop their current health-care coverage;

* Whereas, the costs involved in complying with the law are likely to cost more Americans their jobs, inhibit the creation of new employment opportunities and suppress wages ...

The petition drive was launched by Joseph Farah, founder and CEO of WorldNetDaily, who said the results are worthy of note already.

"This is a very impressive petition, but it will be much more impressive at 100,000 or 200,000 or 1 million," he said. "We need people signing and spreading the news about this effort - news that has not been reported anywhere else expect at WND."

"The QC Celebrates History at New Location"

Royalty, comedy swordsmen and pirates will invade the Quad Cities on October 9/10th as the 6th annual FOUR KINGDOMS RENAISSANCE & PYRATE FAIRE sets up on new grounds with a different look on the back fields of Rock Island's Camelot KOA Campgrounds.

This year's edition of the festival will be particularly different as it's under the management of veteran Renaissance faire performer and staffer Bruce Eyton of Minneapolis. His SwordintheStone Productions is pulling together a wide variety of stage acts, artisan merchants, educational demonstrators and comic village characters who will bring the virgin woodland setting to life.

Eyton, himself, is a fencing instructor and stage combat professional who has had several of his A-list comedy shows toured around the country.

Gregory Schmidt of Festivals International and publisher of the Regional Renaissance Reporter reports, "Bruce Eyton has the spirit and gumption to enhance this event by virtue of being one of the most avid Renaissance fest performers and Medieval faire supporters that I know. I'm confident that his re-branding of the Quad Cities history event will be a success."

The move to the back woods and open prairie acres behind the KOA Camelot main property will provide the Renaissance/Pyrate faire with a more authentic setting for a royal festival celebration. It also gives the incoming pirates a waterfront atmosphere.

The Four Kingdoms Renaissance and Pyrate Faire will run on Columbus Day Weekend (Saturday, Oct 9 & Sunday, Oct 10) from 11am to 6pm as a "rain or shine" event.

It will take place at 2311 78th Avenue West in Rock Island, Illinois, on the undeveloped grounds behind the Camelot KOA Campgrounds with plenty of free parking.

Admission will be $10 at the gate for adults ($9 in advance and $15 for 2-day pass)) with military personnel, seniors & students at $7. Kids under 6 are free and there are group discounts.

(Rock Island, IL.) Fourteenth Circuit Chief Judge Jeffrey W. O'Connor along with Circuit Clerk Lisa Bierman announced the opening of a new internet-based legal self-help center for lower income individuals who cannot find an attorney to represent them in civil matters in court. The new center will be located in the Circuit Clerk's Office, General Division on the Third Floor of the Rock Island County Courthouse. The center will be available during regular business hours. Individuals who have computers connected to the internet can access the materials on the Rock Island County Legal Self-Help Center at http://rockisland.illinoislegalaid.org. The center is available online twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week.

"With high unemployment, we are seeing a steady increase in the number of individuals who are forced to come to court without an attorney because they do not have the money to hire one," said Chief Judge O'Connor. "We know that people are better off in court with a skilled attorney," he said. "The reality is, however, that many people cannot pay an attorney to handle their case nor can they find a legal aid attorney to help them. Prairie State Legal Services is overwhelmed with requests for representation," Judge O'Connor said. "While the legal self-help center is not an adequate substitute for an attorney, it does provide valuable legal information that individuals can use to present their case to the judge more effectively," he said. "We hope that unrepresented people
will use this new resource to make their court experience less threatening and more comprehensible," he said.

"While the Circuit Clerk's Office works closely with the judges and the court system, we are not lawyers and cannot give legal advice. People often come first to the Circuit Clerk's Office looking for help with their legal problems when they cannot find a lawyer. We are pleased to have a place to refer these people to get the legal information that they need at no cost to them," said Circuit Clerk Lisa Bierman. "We are providing a public access computer in the General Division of the Circuit Clerk's Office for people to use who do not have a computer at home. The legal self-help center can also be accessed
from any computer with internet access including public access computers at our local public libraries," she said.

"Coming to court without an attorney can be both intimidating and frustrating. All too often people have only a vague idea about how the court system works and what facts need to be presented to the judge," said Joseph A. Dailing, Executive Director of the Illinois Coalition for Equal Justice. "The legal  information on the website, which is written by Illinois attorneys, will give people information about their legal problem as well as legal pleadings to file in court," he said. "Wherever possible we encourage people to find an attorney to help them. The Circuit Clerk's Office will begin handing out a sheet listing information about sources of legal representation," he said. "But inspite of these efforts, some people won't be able to find an attorney and will need to
represent themselves in court. The legal self-help center can make that process less mysterious and less frustrating," he concluded.

"We provide representation and advice to as many low income people as we can but our staff is limited and we cannot help everyone who needs representation, even with the volunteer lawyer program," said Gretchen Farwell, Managing Attorney of the Rock Island Office of Prairie State Legal Services. "For those who we cannot help, the Rock Island County Legal Self-Help Center will provide useful information if people take the time to prepare for their court hearing," she said.

The internet-based legal self-help center provides legal information and court pleadings on a broad array of simpler civil legal problems. The website also has videos explaining the court system and how to go to court. The front page of the website features a short welcoming video by Fourteenth Circuit Chief Judge Jeffrey W. O'Connor. It also displays the hours of operation of the center and the location of the center in the courthouse. The homepage features a list of six of the most common legal problems. A search bar at the bottom allows users to search for other legal information.

The legal self-help center was developed by a broad-based collaboration of people and organizations in Rock Island County including the judiciary, the Trial Court Administrator, the Circuit Clerk's Office, Family Resources Domestic Violence Services Program and Prairie State Legal Services. The Illinois Coalition for Equal Justice and Stacie Colston, Outreach Coordinator for Illinois Legal Aid Online, provided technical support and assistance to the planning committee. Illinois Legal Aid Online, an Illinois nonprofit organization, operates and maintains the underlying website for the legal self-help center.

The Rock Island County Legal Self-Help Center is the forty-ninth such center to open in Illinois since 2007. A grant from the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation through Prairie State Legal Services provided the start up funding for the new legal self-help center. The Illinois Equal Justice Foundation receives it funding through an appropriation from the Illinois General Assembly.
