I want you to be the first to know.

It's a big responsibility to represent the people of Iowa in the United States Senate, especially after Tom Harkin has shown us how for the last 30 years. But, if you are willing to help me, I'm ready to go.

That's why today, I'm setting up a committee to run for the U.S. Senate.

Click here to let your family and friends know about the important first steps of this campaign.

Just as Sen Harkin did when he first ran, I'll need to meet a lot of Iowans outside of my district. I'll pledge to them, just like the people of Eastern Iowa that I will listen, work hard, and get things done for Iowa's middle class.

It's time to start a conversation with Iowans - about rebuilding the middle class, creating economic opportunity for everyone, and keeping America strong. I'm looking forward to the conversation and I'm looking forward to meeting with you. We will kick off the conversations with a Facebook chat in the next few weeks.

And, like today, you'll be the first to know when those will happen.

See you soon,

Bruce

(DES MOINES) - The year 2013 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Hebei Province, PRC and State of Iowa Sister State relationship. During those 30 years, Iowa and Hebei have participated in many projects.  Throughout 2013 there will be events statewide that will be held to commemorate this important relationship.

On February 11th, there will be events that will include a small group performance of Hebei and Iowa youth in the chambers of the Iowa House of Representatives. Also attending the performance will be six officials from Hebei Province.  On Monday evening, the 11th, from 6-7pm at Valley High School the Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School Orchestra (from Hebei) will perform a joint concert with Valley High School's Orchestra.  This event is free and open to the public.

International relationship building is the cornerstone of the work Iowa Sister States does. The Hebei/Iowa relationship has received much attention due to the fact that in 1985 Xi Jinping came to Iowa from Hebei on an agricultural tour through Iowa Sister States. Xi Jinping will become President of China in 2013 and has made it very clear that he is fond of Iowa and its citizens, even visiting the State of Iowa in February, 2012.

In recognition of this relationship, Governor Branstad sent a New Year greeting to Governor Zhang Qingwei and citizens of Hebei, China.  In return, attached is the letter of greeting from Hebei Governor Zhang to the citizens of Iowa.

Iowa Sister States (ISS) is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization that was founded in 1985 to manage the official relationships the State of Iowa has with 8 different countries.  To learn more about the Iowa/Hebei sister state relationship, or to view a list of its activities, please visit the Iowa Sister State website www.iowasisterstates.org.

There are new opportunities to harvest corn stover in two regions of Iowa - near Nevada in central Iowa and near Dubuque in eastern Iowa. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host two meetings, one in each part of the state, to address emerging opportunities related to stover harvesting for the biomass feedstock needs of local industries.

The central Iowa meeting will be held Feb. 28 at the Iowa Arboretum near Madrid, Iowa. This meeting is in collaboration with DuPont and will look at the use of corn stover in cellulosic ethanol production. The eastern Iowa meeting will be held on March 6 at the 4-H Building at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds, Dubuque, Iowa. The eastern Iowa meeting is in collaboration with JELD-WEN Fiber of Iowa to discuss use of corn stover as a fiber material. Both meetings start at 12:45 p.m.

Stover harvesting can impact economic, agronomic and water quality production factors. The meetings will address many of the positives and negatives of stover harvesting and discuss how stover harvesting can be managed within corn production. Crop producers, land owners, crop consultants, agronomists, service providers and others with an interest in stover harvest and its
removal from farm fields are encouraged to attend.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach meeting speakers include : John Sawyer and Antonio Mallarino, soil fertility specialists; Mahdi Al-Kaisi, soil management specialist; Chad Hart and William Edwards, agricultural marketing specialists; Matt Helmers and Kapil Arora, agricultural engineering specialists; Mark Licht and Virgil Schmitt, field agronomists; and Kelvin Leibold, farm management specialist. Industry speakers on the agenda include : Dr. David Ertl, technology commercialization manager, Iowa Corn Growers Association; Dennis Penland, DuPont business development manager; Andy Heggenstaller, agronomy research manager, DuPont; and Gardner Lance, general manager, JELD-WEN Fiber of Iowa.

A noon lunch will be sponsored by industry partners prior to the start of the meeting at no cost to the participants, however pre-registration is required. Industry representatives will be available to meet with participants during lunch and at the close of the meeting.

Registration forms for the Feb. 28 Boone County meeting are available from the Boone County Extension Office by calling 515-432-3882, or online at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/boone/. Registration for the March 6 Dubuque meeting are available from the Dubuque County Extension and Outreach Office by calling 563 583-6496, or online at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/dubuque/.

There is no fee to attend this meeting. Registration is required for correct meal and handout counts. Walk-in registration the day of the meeting will only be accepted if space is available.

Carolyn Mitchell shares second book featuring furry friend Riley Chester-field Mouse

HICKMAN, Neb. - In her second imaginative tale featuring Riley Chester-field Mouse, "The Tale of the Pumpkin Seed Squad" (published by AuthorHouse), author Carolyn Mitchell has penned yet another adventure starring the tiny hero.

In "The Tale of the Pumpkin Seed Squad," Riley joins his friends in an exciting football game using a pumpkin seed as the ball. The comical twists in the game come vibrantly alive through clever rhyme and captivating illustrations by Brenda Timms.

"The Tale of the Pumpkin Seed Squad" is a delightful commentary on competition and sportsmanship that will surely charm even the least of its budding-athlete readers. It is a light-hearted tale that captures a fun and familiar topic in an easy-to-read rhyme, vividly bringing each character and storyline to life.

Mitchell explains that her book is important because she feels the "basic values of friendship and sportsmanship are important to emphasize in an increasingly busy and secular society."

About the Author and Illustrator

Following a successful nursing career, Carolyn Mitchell now enthusiastically pursues her lifelong interest in writing and poetic expression. Through this series of engaging rhyming tales, she aims to foster a continuing excitement for reading in children of all ages. Mitchell lives on a farm near Hickman, Neb., with her husband, Daryl. Together they've raised three daughters and have six grandchildren.

Illustrator Brenda Timms is a gifted and successful artist who expresses her talents through multiple mediums. Equally at ease with oils and acrylics in her paintings, she has also created many amazing sculptures on both small and life-sized scales. After rearing a daughter and son in her native Nebraska countryside, Timms now continues her artistic endeavors in Georgia.

Dear Neighbor,

As a father and grandfather, the events that happened in Newtown, Connecticut were truly heart wrenching.  Our entire nation's thoughts, prayers and gratitude went to the first responders, teachers and administrators who acted so heroically to protect the children.

In the wake of this tragedy, I called for a national conversation to begin about how to address the troubling frequency with which lives have been cut short by senseless violence.  This conversation needed to start at home, which is why I have hosted a series of meetings and roundtables with folks from across the state; have talked with sheriffs and police chiefs; sat down with teachers, administrators and school officials; and heard directly from mental health experts.

Now I want to hear from you.  As your representative, my first priority is to make sure that the voices of the Second District are heard.   My office has received thousands of emails, letters and phone calls about school safety, the need to address mental health issues, and gun safety. Now it is time to talk directly with you.  Your input and insight are important to me.

That is why I am holding a telephone town hall on Wednesday, February 13th at 6:00 PM CST. You are invited to save the date, sign up here, and join in a conversation about gun safety, school safety and mental health care.

Thank you for placing your trust and confidence in me to be your voice.  I am committed to working for Iowans and look forward to hearing from you about this important topic. Also, feel free to forward this to your family and friends, I want to hear from as many Iowans as possible.

Sincerely,

Dave Loebsack
Iowa's Second District
