DES MOINES, IOWA (October 24, 2023) — Attorney General Brenna Bird has announced actions the Iowa Attorney General’s Office will be taking to prosecute election misconduct and fraud cases.
Under the government reorganization law that Governor Kim Reynolds signed earlier this year, the Iowa Attorney General’s Office was given the responsibility to prosecute cases relating to election integrity. The law went into effect on July 1 of this year.
“It’s critical that we maintain Iowans’ trust in our election systems,” said AG Bird. “No Iowan should have to worry about whether their vote will count. I am committed to ensuring the safety and security of our elections so that every Iowan’s voice is heard.”
Iowa law prohibits election misconduct that interferes with an Iowan’s right to vote or allows for the casting of an illegal vote. Examples of election misconduct include:
- Registration fraud;
- Voter fraud;
- Bribery;
- Intimidation or coercion of voters; and
- Voting equipment tampering.
Any Iowan who is concerned about potential election misconduct should report it to their local law-enforcement agency. With questions relating to election procedures, Iowans may contact their local county auditor or the Iowa Secretary of State.
