CLINTON, IOWA (June 27, 2019) — The Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center, "Clinton, Iowa's Children's Museum," is ready to celebrate America’s birthday. This week’s WOW Wednesday is making a red, white, and blue party bead necklace, and plan to juggle with Miss Jean. Then, get ready to leap into the holiday with Bounce House day at Funtime Friday. Please note the Discovery Center will be closed on Thursday, July 4, but you can join their walking unit in the Clinton Fourth of July Parade. Also, the Discovery Center is currently participating in the Birdies for Charity fundraiser. Save the date for the Pirate Tea Party on Wednesday, July 24. Each of these programs is free with regular museum admission or membership. Also, a reminder that the Discovery Center is a Blue Star Museum, granting free admission to active duty military and their families through Labor Day, September 1.
WOW Wednesday
Wednesday, July 3, 2-5PM, is a WOW Wednesday at the Discovery Center, sponsored by US Bank Foundation. Stop over at the Please-Touch-Table to make a patriotic necklace. You can wear it at the Clinton Fourth of July Parade.
WOW Wednesday is perfect for school-aged kids and their families and is a great activity for a summer afternoon. WOW Wednesday is drop in with no pre-registration required — it is an enrichment program with no extra class fee.
Miss Jean is also here every WOW Wednesday, with her chess, juggling, and logic puzzles. Miss Jean teaches beginning chess to all, from preschoolers through adult, or she will play a strategic game with an opponent to match their skill-level. Additionally, she loves to juggle and can teach anyone of any age to become a successful juggler. Also, she has on hand three large cases of logic puzzles, construction materials, and hands-on brain-teasers to fascinate any age. She can teach anyone; all ages and abilities are welcome.
Fourth of July Parade
Thursday, July 4, the Discovery Center is CLOSED for the holiday. They will be participating in Clinton’s Fourth of July Parade and you can join the Discovery Center in their walking unit. Leading the way for the Discovery Center will be Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty. Make sure to wear your niftiest red, white, and blue, and flag-ify your bike, trike, stroller, or scooter. Meet up at the 9th Ave North boat ramp, no later than 12:45PM.
Funtime Friday
Friday, July 5, at 10AM, is Funtime Friday, sponsored by Clinton Kiwanis Club and Alliant Energy Foundation. Hooray for the USA, and celebrate the fun way, with Bounce House Day. There’s a snack and story to go with the theme. This popular program is designed for preschoolers and their grown-ups, although all-age children are welcome anytime, especially during summer vacations.
Blue Star Museum
Again this year, the Discovery Center will participate in the Blue Star Museum program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. This program begins on Armed Forces Day, May 18, and runs through Labor Day, September 1. As a Blue Star Museum, the Discovery Center will give free museum admission to active duty military and their families (up to five family members). Active military includes: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, National Guard, and Reserve Members. Please present your active-duty card at the admission desk when you come to the Discovery Center.
Birdies for Charity
The Discovery Center is an authorized and registered non-profit organization currently participating in the Birdies for Charity fundraiser in conjunction with the John Deer Golf Classic. Donors can guess the number of birdie shots that will be made during the tournament and can then pledge a per-shot gift to the children’s museum. Donors can also pledge a flat amount to donate. Pledge forms can be gotten from the Discovery Center, and pledges are due by Wednesday, July 3.
Pirate Tea Party
Get ready on Wednesday, July 24, 2-4PM, for a special WOW Wednesday event sponsored by US Bank. Ahoy! Set course for the Discover Center. All hands on deck — we’re approaching the Pirate Tea Party. Lasses and lads are encouraged to dress in costume for the occasion. Don your finest pirate garb and become a mystical mermaid or your other favorite seafaring creature. Party activities are perfect for all ages and will include tea and snacks, a treasure hunt, games, creation projects, and you get to meet a real parrot. Reservations are appreciated so please call the Discovery Center.
The Discovery Center is located at 332 8th Avenue South in downtown Clinton, Iowa, at the foot of the US 30 Bridge over the mighty Mississippi — where the Lincoln Highway meets the Great River Road. They are open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 9:30AM-5PM, and Sundays, 12:30-5PM. Museum admission is $4 per person, ages two to 64; $3 per person, ages 65 and older; free for children one and younger; and free for members of the children's museum.
