Le Claire, Iowa, June 26, 2012 - Mississippi River Distilling Company is excited to announce the release of their newest seasonal product, "Pride of the Wapsi Strawberry Vodka" on June 29, 2012.  MRDC is once again partnering with an Iowa business on this product.  This time Pride of the Wapsi, a berry patch near Long Grove, Iowa.  The new spirit is just in time for Independence Day celebrations.

"The whole idea of the seasonal spirits is to bring some unique products to the market and also partner with other local businesses," Ryan Burchett, MRDC owner and distiller, says.  "We were really excited when the gang at Pride of the Wapsi said they would have enough strawberries to pull this off."

MRDC used 1,600 pounds of hand-picked strawberries in this latest creation.  They loaded their still with fresh strawberries and their signature River Pilot Vodka.  After a 12-hour infusion, the strawberries and vodka were redistilled for a one of a kind flavor.

"We're so excited about the result," remarks owner and distiller Garrett Burchett.  "Our unique distillation technique gives us the essence, fragrance and flavor of strawberry without the sugary sweetness of a liqueur or other artificially flavored vodkas.  The aroma of this product is amazing.  It smells like fresh strawberry jam."

For Pride of the Wapsi owners Pat and Lora Dierickx, this was a big project.  "This year we closed the patch down a little sooner than we had hoped, but we were happy to be able to get the 1,600 pounds of strawberries picked for the distillery before that." Pat says.  "We think this project will bring a whole new awareness to our farm.  We never dreamt that our berries would be used for vodka.  But we're so pleased to see this collaboration work out."

The first bottles of the strawberry vodka will be released this Friday, June 29.  The following week, Pride of the Wapsi will be specially featured at MRDC's First Friday event held Friday, July 6 from 5:30 - 8 p.m. Along with the farmers being on hand, fans who purchase bottles that evening will be able to get a free commemorative pint glass marking the release of the new vodka.

Mississippi River Distilling Company is open from 10 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday and from 12 to 5 PM Sundays.  Free tours are offered to the public daily on the hour from 12 to 4 PM or by appointment.  The tour takes visitors through the entire distilling process.  Tours end in the Grand Tasting Room with free samples of products for those patrons over 21 years of age.

LeClaire, Iowa, May 30, 2012 - Mississippi River Distilling Company will release the third batch of Cody Road Bourbon Whiskey on Friday, June 1, 2012.

Both first and second releases of the whiskey sold out across Iowa in Illinois within a week of their respective release dates.  With this third batch also comes a slightly larger quantity of bottles as 1,500 bottles to be distributed around Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska.  MRDC's retail shop in Le Claire will have 80 bottles for sale starting at 10 a.m. Friday.  Due to the high demand, sales at the distillery will be limited to one bottle per person.  The Iowa Alcohol Beverage Division is limiting retailers to six bottles per store, per week to help spread the supply.

Owner and distiller Ryan Burchett says to expect another quick sale.  "Last time we released bourbon, people were lined up down the street waiting for us to open.  We were sold out in an hour," said Ryan.  "I'm not sure a day has gone by since that someone hasn't stopped in or called to see if we have any more.  Unfortunately, this batch likely won't last much longer than the last one."

In Iowa, the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division will be limiting stores to 6 bottles each until the bourbon is gone.  The supply is expected to sell out to retailers within a day of release.

Distillers Ryan and Garrett Burchett continue to work on increasing the supply to match demand.  Starting in November, the distillery will begin releasing 1,000 bottles per week.  They hope by the end of 2012 it will be easier to find a bottle on store shelves.

This Friday also marks the distillery's monthly First Friday.  This open house social will be held June 1 from 5:30 - 8 p.m.  While the bourbon is expected to sell out during the day at the distillery, there will be some available for tasting during the First Friday event.  MRDC will feature food from the Crane and Pelican restaurant, another Le Claire establishment.  There will also be two signature drinks for the evening.  We'll be sampling the "Bees Knees," a drink featuring River Rose Gin, pineapple juice, grapefruit juice and honey.  The second cocktail will be a combination of MRDC's Queen Bee Honey Whiskey and lemonade.  Both are cool and refreshing cocktails for summertime!  Free samples of both food and drink will be served and the complete recipes can be found at our website www.mrdistilling.com.

Le Claire, Iowa, April 30, 2012 - Fans and whiskey enthusiasts will soon be able to find another Mississippi River Distilling Company whiskey on store shelves.  Queen Bee Honey Whiskey will be released for sale this Friday, May 4.  This is a corn whiskey infused with fresh honey from beekeepers near Preston, Iowa, just 30 miles north of the distillery.  The use of fresh honey is unique says owner and distiller Ryan Burchett.

"There are several honey whiskey products on the market, but if you look closely at the label you'll see that they are actually labeled as liqueurs and not whiskeys," Burchett comments.  "That's because once you add sugar to a product, you can't call it whiskey anymore.  Queen Bee is whiskey with real honey added to it, nothing else, which provides a nice smooth sweetness without overwhelming the palate."

Queen Bee Honey Whiskey is the latest seasonal product to be released by MRDC.  Each seasonal product is a limited bottling, usually 3,000 - 4,000 375-ml bottles total available for distribution.  The idea behind each seasonal spirit is to bring some unique products to the market and also partner with other local businesses to incorporate new local ingredients.

The distillery is limiting production to 6,000 bottles of Queen Bee Honey Whiskey.  "It's our biggest seasonal yet," said owner and distiller Garrett Burchett.  "We did 3,200 bottles of our seasonal rye whiskey in February and distributors were sold out in six weeks.  We're making a little more of this one, so hopefully it will last a bit longer."

Friday, May 4 will also be MRDC's "First Friday" with a Cinco de Mayo celebration from 5:30 to 8 p.m.  The First Friday feature event is a free open house and May marks the one year anniversary of these monthly evening socials.  Chef Stephanie is preparing a honey mustard sauce with the new Queen Bee Honey Whiskey and celebration the fiesta night with fried bananas.  The bar will feature a couple different kinds of margaritas prepared with River Baron Artisan Spirit and River Rose Gin.

Mark your calendars now for the next release of MRDC's Cody Road Whiskey on Friday, June 1.

Le Claire, Iowa, January 26, 2012 - The gang at Mississippi River Distilling Company has been busy again distilling up another seasonal whiskey.  Windmill Rye Whiskey will be available to purchase and taste on Friday, February 3 at the distillery and local retailers.  MRDC encourages spirit connoisseurs and rye novices to explore the spiciness and earthy qualities of rye in this whiskey.

Locally grown rye from Reynolds, Illinois was taken to De Immigrant Windmill in Fulton, Illinois for milling.  This authentic Dutch windmill, which sits right on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi, is just 20 miles upriver from the distillery.  Each seasonal spirit MRDC produces is a product of partnering with other local businesses and using local products.

"The power of nature churned the rye into a flour that was then returned to our distillery for fermentation.  The spirit is 100% rye and was aged over charred oak and then finished in used bourbon barrels," remarks owner/distiller Ryan Burchett.  "It was really a pleasure to work with the volunteer millers in Fulton.  They were so eager to take part in this unique venture.  They even came out and helped us bottle it!"

The whiskey has a very unique flavor and finish that is quite different than the typical rye whiskey.  "Most rye whiskey is blended with corn."  Said distiller Garrett Burchett.  "We like to let people experience the complexities of the grain, so this one is 100% rye.  Just as you'd expect from a rye bread, this spirit is a little heavier and more complicated.  We've been amazed at how it opens and evolves in the glass in between sips.  It's been a lot of fun to hear all the different flavors people are pulling out of it."

As with each of their seasonal spirits, the rye whiskey will be a limited release.  Distillers and volunteers bottled approximately 3,200 bottles.  Windmill Rye Whiskey will also be specially featured at MRDC's First Friday event on Friday, February 3 from 5:30 - 8 p.m.

Fans of MRDC spirits should also mark your calendars now for the next big release, Cody Road Bourbon Whiskey.  The second release of this much sought after spirit will be Friday, March 2, with distillery doors opening at 10 a.m.  The first release in December saw 120 bottles sell out at the distillery within four hours with the rest of the 1,000 bottle batch selling out in just 3 days at retailers.

Mississippi River Distilling Company is open from 10 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday and from 12 to 5 PM Sundays.  Free tours are offered to the public daily on the hour from 12 to 4 PM or by appointment.  The tour takes visitors through the entire distilling process and end in the Grand Tasting Room with free samples of products for those patrons over 21 years of age.

Le Claire, Iowa, January 2, 2012 - Mississippi River Distilling Company will be ringing in the new year and celebrating their first anniversary this Friday, January 6, during their First Friday Feature from 5:30-8 p.m.  MRDC officially opened their doors December 17, 2010, but the First Friday evening gives the public a chance to celebrate with the owners and distillers.

"This past year has flown by for us," owner/distiller Ryan Burchett says.  "It's been a great year of learning, growth and a lot of fun in the process.  We hope all our fans and supporters come out to celebrate this milestone with us."

MRDC will feature two signature cocktails; a Mississippi Sunset featuring River Baron Artisan Spirit mixed with orange juice, grenadine and a splash of Sierra Mist and Hot Buttered Baron, a drink to warm you up on a cold January night.  Chef Stephanie Godke will prepare an orange cranberry sauce made with River Rose Gin and serve it over angel food cake.  She'll also showcase River Pilot Vodka in a vodka vinaigrette antipasto platter.  Live music will fill the distillery to add to the celebration and discounts on bottles of spirits will be offered.

"This has been a banner year for us with nearly 28,000 visitors in the first year, the release of six products, and approximately 30,000 bottles of spirits sold," Garrett Burchett, owner/distiller comments. "We've seen a lot of momentum and are excited for our second year of business."

The brothers will continue to keep busy with their latest seasonal spirit, Windmill Rye Whiskey, to be released February 3 followed by the much anticipated second release of Cody Road Bourbon on March 2. LeClaire, IA, December 21, 2011 - The homegrown allure of locally made spirits has caught the attention of a national news anchor.  John Roberts, Senior National Correspondent for FOX News and former anchor and reporter for CNN and CBS News, toured Mississippi River Distilling Company in LeClaire while visiting family in the area over the weekend.  He was so enamored with the distillery and tour that he decided to tell the story to the world.

Roberts penned a "Food & Drink" feature article for FoxNews.com.  "When you walk into the tasting room, with its expansive view of the Mississippi River, you're hooked." he wrote.  Roberts contacted distillers Ryan and Garrett Burchett on Tuesday to ask a few questions for the story.

"What was really cool about talking with John is that he sincerely enjoyed his time at the distillery.  It's always fun to hear different impressions from tourists about what we're doing here.  It's a real thrill to have someone who has seen the world tell us he gets a kick out of what we're doing here and enjoys our products." said Ryan.

Garrett gave the tour to John and his family.  As mentioned in the story, John was worried that he asked too many questions.  "We get a lot of questions on every tour.  So I never thought twice about it." said Garrett. "But I guess it's not every day that you're questioned by a national news correspondent."

The brothers told John that if he makes it back to Iowa for the January Caucuses, they'd love to have him back to check on the progress of the next batch of Cody Road Bourbon Whiskey.  The whiskey was sold out while John was on his visit.

LeClaire, Iowa, December 4, 2011 - After its much anticipated release, Mississippi River Distilling Company's Cody Road Bourbon Whiskey was a near sell out within a day of its release on Friday, December 2, 2011.

"We had a line waiting outside the distillery starting at about 9 a.m. before we opened at 10 on Friday," Ryan Burchett, owner and distiller says.  "We had a steady line of people until about noon and sold all 120  bottles we had at the distillery in four hours."

As of Sunday afternoon, Rock Island Hy-Vee still had some of the Cody Road Bourbon for sale but was only putting it out one bottle at a time.  Hy-Vee's in both Ankeny and Marion, Iowa also still had small quantities left.  But most retailers had sold their entire stock by the end of the weekend.

The distillers have been keeping fans and followers updated on where they can find bottles via Facebook and Twitter as they hear updates or are able to call retailers.  Many area stores sold out within a day of delivery, some selling as many as 60 bottles.  The state of Iowa limited retailers to no more than 60 bottles per store.  Within 24 hours, the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division had sold out of all the stock they had.

"We had hoped this would go over well, but we very pleasantly surprised when the state had orders for all the cases we sent them," Garrett Burchett, owner and distiller says.  "Unfortunately, it moved so fast that it was gone before some retailers didn't even have the chance to order it from the state."

In total, MRDC made just short of 1,000 bottles of this first batch.  The bourbon is made from grains harvested from within 25 miles of the distillery.  Corn comes from LeClaire and the wheat and barley come from Reynolds, Illinois.  The spirit is aged for nearly a year and distillers only released the first 6 barrels they made.

The Burchett brothers have been busy for the past year planning for the demand and have continued making and barreling their bourbon.  The next release of Cody Road Bourbon will be Friday, March 2.  Moving through 2012, larger releases of bourbon will become more regular to help catch up to demand.

"We anticipate having more in this next batch.  Supplies will be tight through the year, but we hope to have enough for everyone's stockings by next Christmas." Ryan says.

Le Claire, Iowa, November 8, 2011 - Mississippi River Distilling Company has recently been recognized with two exceptional industry awards for their spirits.  MRDC's River Pilot Vodka received the Beverage Tasting Institute's (BTI) Gold Medal in the International Review of Spirits as well as a Bronze Medal at this year's 2011 New York International Spirits Competition (NYISC).

River Pilot was recognized in BTI's Unflavored Vodka category.  The tasting was completed in BTI's Chicago Tasting Room on November 1.  River Pilot received a score of 90, which put it in the "Exceptional" category and garnered the gold medal award.

BTI described River Pilot as, "Aromas of rye cracker and salt water taffy with a satiny dryish medium-to-full body and a grainy, creamy vanilla, dusty stone, and Brazil nut accented finish.  A nice balance of raw and refined characteristics."

The Beverage Testing Institute relies heavily on highly experienced, professional guest tasters who are either retailers, restaurateurs, or prominent writers that are especially knowledgeable about the beverage category being reviewed.  All panelists are rigorously screened and audited and then trained in BTI's proprietary blind tasting methodology.

The second award came from the prestigious New York International Spirits Competition.  NYISC uses trade-only judges from top to bottom that consist of people who are buyers from the top retail stores, restaurant and bar owners, distributors and importers.  Each submission is placed in its product category and along with other spirits in its same price range.  While the full list of 2011 winners has not yet been publicized, in 2010 only 2 medals were awarded in this highly competitive category.

"These are fantastic awards and such a compliment to what we are doing," Ryan Burchett, owner/distiller says.  "To have a product handmade from local ingredients be recognized with by two prominent nationally recognized organizations in the industry is just outstanding.  It lends a lot of credibility to what little guys like us are doing."

These awards are on the heels of another national recognition for MRDC's River Baron Vodka.  In August, River Baron was recognized as the 8th best vodka made in the United States by TheFiftyBest.com.

It's been an exciting time at the distillery as MRDC crossed another big milestone over the weekend.  The distillery welcomed its 20,000th visitor in less than 11 months of being open.

"It has been so encouraging to visit with all the people who have stopped in to see what we're all about," said owner/distiller Garrett Burchett.  "People have taken such a tremendous interest in our locally grown products.  We love having the opportunity to share our story with everyone who walks in the door and for them to see the grain-to-glass process in person."

Mississippi River Distilling Company's next product release will be their much anticipated Cody Road Bourbon Whiskey will hit store shelves on December 2, 2011

Le Claire, Iowa, October 31, 2011 - Mississippi River Distilling Company is excited to announce the release of their second seasonal product, Iowa Coffee Company Liqueur, on November 4, 2011.  MRDC is once again partnering with an Iowa business on this product, this time Iowa Coffee Company from the Des Moines area.  The new spirit will be perfect for holiday gatherings and as a unique gift.

"The whole idea of the seasonal spirits is to bring some unique products to the market and also partner with other local businesses," Ryan Burchett, MRDC owner and distiller, says.  "We were really excited that we knew someone in Iowa who was an experienced artisan coffee roaster."

MRDC takes Iowa Coffee Company's hand roasted Peruvian blend and infuses it into River Pilot Vodka.  Along the process, fresh cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans are added.  As a seasonal product, this is a limited, one time bottling with approximately 4,000 bottles for distribution.

MRDC features two signature cocktails at each First Friday.  This month we'll have Mississippi Night for visitors to try, which is iced coffee with Iowa Coffee Company Liqueur (ICCL) and River Baron Vodka.  The second cocktail will be a Stone Post, a wonderful fall concoction.  It's a mixture of apple cider, ginger simple syrup and River Pilot Vodka topped off with ginger beer.  Chef Stephanie Godke has also come up with three new recipes using MRDC products.  We'll give samples of ICCL grilled skirt steak with a coffee dry rub, ICCL brownies with cappuccino frosting and River Rose Gin pear cake.

Iowa Coffee Company (ICC) owner Tom Sibbernsen has been roasting coffee for over 20 years.  Sibbernsen originally got started in the coffee business with a friend in Omaha and then moved back to his roots in Iowa to start ICC.  He had a coffee shop inside of Des Moines' Mercy Hospital for 11 years and now sells his sought after beans through his website and at the popular downtown Des Moines farmer's market.

"I thought the collaboration was a great idea," Sibbernsen remarks.  "The reason I named my business 'Iowa Coffee Company' was not only because Iowa is where it was founded, but also because my business mission is to represent the core values of hard work, honesty, and friendliness that are characteristic of our state.  I know that Ryan and his team at MRDC share those values as well."

Burchett says there aren't many local artisan coffee roasters in Iowa and he was really excited about what Sibbernsen was bringing to the market.  "We thought it would be a great partnership to take fresh, locally roasted beans and combine them with our local farm fresh spirits."

"This was a great opportunity to collaborate with another locally focused Iowa business and combine our products to create something completely new," Sibbernsen says.  "It's very satisfying to see ICC's name not only on a coffee bag, but teamed with MRDC on a bottle.  Partnerships like this are a great way to help two quality businesses producing local artisan products expand their customer base within the state of Iowa."

Mississippi River Distilling Company's next product, Cody Road Whiskey, will be released in December 2011.
