COAL VALLEY, ILLINOIS (October 4, 2022) — The Niabi zoo is excited to announce the arrival of our two newest inhabitants! Beni and Togo, two African Red River Hogs. Beni and Togo are brothers and where born in a zoo here in the US. They are both just over two years old and are growing fast. Red River hogs are found in the rainforest and wet savannahs of west and central Africa. Full grown red river hogs can weigh as much as 250 lbs.

COAL VALLEY, ILLINOIS (September 8, 2022) — Midwestern audiences will discover Shakespeare’s comedic spectacle, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as Stone Soup Shakespeare presents its madcap, mischievous, and free to the public production.  With a focus on the character Bottom, this production poses the question: what stories that we are seeing are real, and what are just a dream?

COAL VALLEY, ILLINOIS (September 8, 2022) — Niabi Zoo is thrilled to announce that our 4th Annual Animal Art Show and sale will be held during the month of September on the following dates: September 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, and 25. Original art by a whole host of animals will be available for purchase, on zoo grounds, from 10am-4pm on each of these days. Entry is included with the price of admission (free to members).

COAL VALLEY, ILLINOIS (August 18, 2022) Join us at the Niabi Zoo this Saturday (August 20) for our exciting Train Ambush. Help the zoo raise money to bring new and exciting exhibits to the Zoo by heading off the local “Paws” at the pass! Fun and educational for the whole family. All proceeds will be used to help support improvements at Niabi.

COAL VALLEY, ILLINOIS (August 10, 2022) — The Niabi Zoo is pleased and excited to announce being named a recipient of the prestigious Illinois State Tourism grant. The grant will fund our new Painted Dog exhibit, an important component in our Niabi Zoo Masterplan. The total grant award is 233,000 dollars, and will cover almost half of the cost of the exhibit.

COAL VALLEY, ILLINOIS (April 27, 2021) — The Niabi Zoo is excited to announce the birth of two Fennec Foxes ( Vulpes zerda). Fennec foxes are native to the Sahara and Sinai deserts of North Africa, and are active hunters of small mammals and reptiles. Fennec foxes are the smallest of all fox species and are known for their unusually large ears that serve to both locate prey underground and to dissipate heat from their bodies in the harsh desert environment.

COAL VALLEY, ILLINOIS (March 30, 2022) — The Niabi Zoo is pleased and excited to announce it participation in several important national and international research programs involving animals in our zoo, and in the wild. “The role of zoos has changed radically over the last few decades,” said Zoo Director Lee Jackson.

No one can watch this destruction occur and not be impacted by the humanitarian catastrophe that is unfolding in real time right before our eyes.

COAL VALLEY, ILLINOIS (March 8, 2022) — The Niabi Zoo is pleased and excited to announce the successful birth of two critically-endangered Amur Leopards. With fewer than 100 individuals left in the wild, this is the most critically-endangered big cat in the world.
