Certification from WIU

Presented by the Goethe Institute and

Hosted by the German American Heritage Center

The German American Heritage Center is proud to bring an outstanding professional development workshop to regional teachers. If you are a teacher in the field of social studies, history, sociology, environmental studies, pre-engineering, sports or German language then this workshop is for you.

A certificate for 6 hours of attendance credit is available from Western Illinois University for this event. Participation is free to all attending teachers. The presenter and materials are furnished to us by the Goethe Institute, which is funded as a cultural arm of the German government and we can assure you of their high quality. A similar workshop was held in 2012 with outstanding results.

The workshop will include information on how you may qualify for a free, all-expense study trip to Germany. A 2012 recipient of this award came from the North Scott School District, and it would be exciting to see another area educator take part in the next round!

John Caspar Wild was a painter and lithographer who produced some of the earliest known depictions of urban America in the 19th century. Especially notable for us, images of Davenport's river valley and some of the first images of the city!

Wild spent the last two years of his life painting scenes in and around Davenport. He died in 1846 and was buried in Davenport's oldest graveyard "City Cemetery" in an unmarked grave until now.  Bring your lawn chairs.

Starting at 1:00 visitors may view two original works of art by Wild. Curator Christina Kastell from the Putnam Museum will be on hand in the Sexton's Cottage for questions.  Live music will begin at 1:30 and at 2:00 the dedication ceremony proceeds with guest speakers that include Swiss Center of N. America President Beth Zurbuchen,

Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba, Bruce Walters Professor of Art WIU, German American Heritage Center President Cal Werner and a live Swiss Alphorn musical presentation.

Join us for a walk through the cemetery and view the final resting place of numerous Davenport City Founders.

There will be no vehicle access into the cemetery for this event. All parking will be on Sturdevant Street between River Drive and Rockingham Rd.

Sponsors for this event include the German-American Clubs of the Quad Cities, Davenport Parks and Recreation Department, and Alderman Bill Boom.

Thank you for your support!

Well, the word is official. Instead of September 5th the Centennial Bridge closing has been extended to October 10th. For now. Won't you drop by this week and show your support for one of the QCA's treasured corners, one that fulfills a place in your heart that is unique and cherished?  And needs your help right now?

Please come by this week - our pain is your gain.  We have a number of items on our 50% off tumble table that need good homes.  There are hand-painted clocks from the Black Forest, colorful wooden mobiles from Germany, lace, t-shirts, toys, decorative items, jewelry, and a host of one-of-a-kind goodies you can't pass up.  A special selection of books will be marked down to $5 and $10.  With these deep discounts the usual 10% off with membership will not apply.
A great time to stock up on holiday presents or stocking stuffers!

Why is that? Because on Thursday, Sept. 4 and Friday, Sept. 5 members will be able to take an additional 15% off the sale prices! And that discount is good for anything in the store! You read that right- special, rarely available bargain rates for our current members. So plan your strategy- come earlier for the premium selection, come later for the rock bottom prices, but please come and support us here at GAHC. If you huddled inside during the frigid winter, now is the time to help us bridge this challenge. Take in the two new exhibits on Berlin, too!
