Dear Friends & Colleagues,

As some of you may have heard, circumstances have developed with Rev. Ron Quay's health such that he has felt the need to retire at the end of 2012. Ron is currently the Executive Director of Churches United, and had originally planned to retire at the end of 2013. He has devoted 10 years of his life to Churches United, and for that we are deeply appreciative.

One of his major accomplishments was his willingness to open Winnie's Place in December of 2006, which expanded the ministry of Churches United to women and children in need of shelter. A second major accomplishment was to lead the way for interfaith dialogue and understanding, which expanded Churches United's relationships with other people of faith through our six year radio show "Faith Talks" and by reaching out to non-Christian faith communities. We wish Ron all the best as he focuses on his retirement, his health and the healing process.

We would also like to share with you that Anne Wachal, who currently is the Associate Director and Program Manager for Churches United, has been asked by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors to lead Churches United as the Acting Executive Director during this transition time. Please keep Anne and her family in your thoughts and prayers as she graciously takes on additional responsibilities at Churches United.

We assure you that all of the Churches United ministries will remain intact as we continue to meet the needs of the community, but you may see a few changes taking place as we journey through this transition period together. It is our intent to continue to be a Christian ecumenical organization in ministry in the Quad City Area for another 50 years, and beyond.

Please keep the Churches United staff and the Board of Directors in your thoughts and prayers during this adjustment time. We are all looking forward to an exciting 2013!!

The 41st annual Quad Cities CROP Hunger Walk to be held this Sunday, October 7, 2012 beginning at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport and crossing the Centennial Bridge into Rock Island.

Looking to make a difference in these trying times, the Quad Cities CROP Hunger Walk has set a goal of 1,000 Walkers and hopes to raise $60,000 to help stop hunger and poverty here in our community and around the world, through self-help initiatives. A portion of the funds raised here in the Quad Cities will go to the hunger-fighting work at local food pantries and other agencies.

Last year, 800 Walkers raised more than $58,000 in their locally organized CROP Hunger Walk.

This year the Quad Cities and some 2,000 cities and towns nationwide are joining together in interfaith community CROP Hunger Walks around the theme "Ending hunger one step at a time." Many of the CROP Walkers will be wearing T-shirts, proclaiming their solidarity with the millions of neighbors around the world who have to walk to live -- as well as with the millions served by local food pantries, food banks, and meal sites here in the U.S. These local ministries share in the funds raised by CROP Hunger Walks.

Haiti is one part of the world where CROP Hunger Walks are making a big difference. In the aftermath of the killer earthquake, Church World Service was there with much-needed emergency assistance. With the recovery effort in full swing, CWS is helping families and communities to rebuild homes, food supplies and livelihoods.

CROP Hunger Walks also play a role in the U.S., helping communities ravaged by floods and tornadoes to recover.

Churches United of the Quad City Area will be participating in the Alan Feinstein challenge

Churches United would like to ask the community to please recognize our long history in operating food pantries and meal sites by supporting our hunger programs beginning March 1 through April 30th.

We have an opportunity to receive other funding from the Alan Feinstein Foundation if we can garner a significant contribution during these 60 days.

Should you feel so moved please designate in the memo line or send us a note you are in your envelope that you are responding to the Feinstein Foundation Challenge.

Churches United will then receive a proportional amount of the $1,000,000 (million) the foundation will be dispersing to hunger agencies all across the country.

Remember, your donation must simply require two things: that it be dated between March 1 and April 30th, 2012 and the Feinstein Foundation must be mentioned somewhere in your mailing.

It has been a tough year and we continue to feed Quad Citians all over the greater Quad City area.

In 2011, our food pantries served over 29,000 families equaling over 102,000 indiivduals. We do make an impact .

So please help us during this time. Thank you!!

Churches United of the Quad City Area is proud to announce that the ecumenical organization will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2011. Throughout the year, Churches United will be hosting an array of events and celebrations to recognize its accomplishments and its contributions to the community through its emergency assistance, hunger and shelter programs, special community worship events, interfaith dialogue on community and national issues and much more.

On January 22, 1961 both the Rock Island County and the Scott County Council of Churches merged to become one regional ecumenical organization thus named the Council of Churches of Scott and Rock Island Counties. It was one of the earliest bi - state organizations and still today is one of the few bi -state church councils in the country. Today, we represent over 136 faith groups and 24 religious denominations and work beyond the Christian community in a variety of interfaith special events.

Churches United will be hosting or participating in four major events that will be taking place throughout 2011 although many other activities will be taking place as well. Join us on April 28, 2011 when Kathleen Kennedy Townsend author of will speak on Failing the Faithful and her perspective on faith and the ecumenical movement as it relates to her book. Along with Ms. Townsend will be an original composition that was composed and will be performed by Mr. William Campbell and the Maia String Quartet. In July, Churches United will be participating in the July 4th parade as we focus on hunger as well as the special anniversary in October commemorating 40 years of hosting the Quad City CROP WALK. Lastly, Churches United will again bring the community together as we sponsor an interfaith prayer service representing 10 years since the horrible tragedy of September 11, 2001.

These and other events will be found on our website beginning January 1st.

For more information, please contact Anne Wachal at 563-332-5002 or contact Churches United at awachal@cuqca.org
