DES MOINES, IOWA (August 25, 2023) — The Iowa Attorney General’s Office has completed its review of the fatal shooting of Matthew Briggs by two police officers from Council Bluffs and Omaha that occurred on July 8, 2023. In a report issued August 25, the office concluded that the actions of the officers, who shot Briggs only after he aimed a shotgun at them from a vehicle he had carjacked, were “legally justified” and that “no criminal charges are warranted.”

DES MOINES, IOWA (August 22, 2023) — Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird has announced she has reached a settlement agreement with Tobacco Manufacturers that will result in the State of Iowa receiving extra payments of more than $171 million over the next six years. The State is now expected to receive approximately $136 million additional payments in April 2024 and the remaining amounts annually from 2025 to 2029.

White is joining AG Bird with the National Child ID program to provide families free identification kits for police to use in case of emergency to help locate a missing child.

DES MOINES, IOWA (August 14, 2023) — Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird has announced her appointment of Leif Olson as Chief Deputy Attorney General. Olson is a graduate of Trinity University and the University of Chicago School of Law. He recently served as Chief of the Special Litigation Division of the Texas Attorney General’s office and currently serves as Deputy Attorney General for Special Litigation, leading the Farm and Freedom Division, in the Iowa Attorney General’s office.

DES MOINES, IOWA (August 9, 2023) — Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is leading sixteen states in a letter to US Congressional leadership, urging the passage of the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (“EATS”) Act. The bill prevents California from regulating farmers and ranchers across the country by preserving states’ authority to regulate agriculture within their own borders.

DES MOINES, IOWA (August 8, 2023) — Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird has brought suit against the Biden Administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) for failing to fulfill Governor Kim Reynolds’ request to allow the sale of year-round E15 gasoline.

DES MOINES, IOWA (July 26, 2023) — The Iowa Supreme Court agreed to hear the appeal of the district court’s order which halts enforcement of Iowa’s Heartbeat Law. Attorney General Brenna Bird released the following statement in response: 

“I am glad that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear our appeal. I look forward to continuing to defend the Heartbeat Law and protect the right to life in court.”

DES MOINES, IOWA (July 21, 2023) — State Attorney General Brenna Bird filed an application for interlocutory appeal with the Iowa Supreme Court to reinstate Iowa’s Heartbeat Law. The appeal challenges the temporary injunction granted by the Polk County District Court on Monday that blocked the Heartbeat Law from protecting unborn life. The Iowa Supreme Court will decide whether to hear the case.
