Mexican restaurant enhances on-going development along Brady Street corridor Things are percolating in several parts of the Hilltop Campus Village, and south Brady  Street is no exception.

Loa Compadres, a new restaurant providing quality Mexican cuisine, opened at 512 Brady Street, in the location formerly occupied by Kong’s Thai restaurant.  Los Compadres offers a variety of entrees, including Tacos, Tortas, and Burros, each with many key ingredients such as steak, chicken, fish or spicy pork. Los Compadres has actually increased the size of former restaurant. Its location is well suited as it provides a unique type of cuisine in an area that will see considerable activity this summer.

Across the street, construction is moving forward on Newbury Living’s 24-unit apartment complex, on the site of a former city-owned parking lot. This will also be the site of the anticipated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interpretive Center, which is presently the object of a major fund raising initiative.

To the north, CSL Plasma is making big changes as well, having demolished a vacant building on the south side of 6th Street in anticipation of building a new facility to serve its customers. When completed, it is expected CSL will have an increased foot-print and additional parking.

The building in which Los Compadres is located has also undergone some improvements, with new windows replacing the empty spaces and broken ones that had been there for some time. This, together with the $120,000 investment made by the city to build a support wall on the south side to shore up the building, has made for a substantial improvement to the façade. The owner has big plans for the interior as well.

The support wall was needed to assure the safety of the building when back in 2009 the building adjacent to it collapsed. Since that time, incremental improvements have been made to the building and to the vicinity, helping to stabilize the neighborhood and make it more desirable for office users, for commercial tenants and for potential residents and visitors.
