The Quad Cities Astronomical Society, in partnership with Bettendorf High School, will hold a solar viewing event at the high school on Saturday, April 29, from 2 to 6 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.

During the event, members of the Quad Cities Astronomical Society will set up telescopes that provide safe viewing of the sun near the school’s main entrance on Middle Road.

The event will also feature a presentation at Bettendorf High School’s Donald A. Schaefer Planetarium.  The 22-minute presentation, entitled “Two Small Pieces of Glass,” explores the history of the telescope.  Show times are 2 p.m., 4 p.m. 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

In case of inclement weather, the planetarium shows will go on, and indoor displays will be set up.

The telescopes used in the event will be equipped with solar filters that allow for safe viewing of the sun.  Never look directly at the sun using equipment that isn’t rated for solar viewing, or with your naked eye.

More information on this event is available by contacting Jeff Struve at (309) 737-0206, e-mail PwrHsePro@aol.com.
