Rock Island, IL: Rock Island Public Library locations at the Rock Island Downtown, 30/31 and Southwest Libraries will be closed Monday, May 29 in observance of Memorial Day. Locations reopen at 9 am for downtown and 30/31 locations, and noon at Southwest.

Additionally, the 30/31 Branch at 3059 30th Street and Southwest Branch at 9010 Ridgewood Road will closed on Saturday, June 10 so that branch staff can assist with the Reading by Design summer reading kickoff. The event takes place Saturday, June 10 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Rock Island Main Library parking lot, 401 19th Street.

The Build a Better Summer Kickoff is a one-stop opportunity to register for the library's summer reading programs, pick up a registration prize and a special gift, while supplies last, and enjoy free family fun, including face painting, a bounce house, balloon art, free refreshments, and special activities, including Metro Youth Drill Team performance at 11:00 am, a kids' rocket launch lab from noon to 1 pm, and a Mentos Soda Geyser blast at 1:15 pm. Other activities include games at the Rock Island Parks Department table, chances to see and touch Rock Island Police, Fire and Emergency response vehicles, and opportunities try your hand at life-sized games, mini-golf, spray-bottle and salad spinner art. The event is free and open to all ages. Most events move inside in the event of rain.

Rock Island Library Reading by Design contests for children, teens, adults, and families run from Saturday, June 10 to July 15, 2017. The reading incentives and more than 70 free events for all ages help keep children, teens and adults active, productive and learning over the summer. Entrants can pick up paper logs and entry forms starting June 10, or participate online, with the library's new Beanstack reading program.

Children who read just six books over the summer are protected against summer learning loss, and score higher on reading and math assessments when they return to school. Research from 1906 on shows that students who don't read and learn over the summer score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer.
