Local Mayors Make National Service Proclamations

On Tuesday March 21, 7 PM and Wednesday March 22 5:30 PM Bettendorf Mayor Gallagher and Davenport Mayor Klipsch respectively will read proclamations in support of National Service and commemorating Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service - Tuesday April 4, 2017. These proclamations will be received by representatives of RSVP of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois and Davenport AmeriCorps program both programs of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

Every year over 2,000 children in the Quad Cities are supported in their learning by both RSVP and AmeriCorps members. In addition to supporting children, in 2016 800+ RSVP members in the Quad Cities provided over 100,000 hours of service helping with food pantries, meals to shut-ins, companionship and a wide range of activities supporting non-profit and government organizations. RSVP and AmeriCorps work together to protect citizens in disasters. Locally, RSVP volunteers play a lead role in volunteer management during a disaster. Nationwide, trained AmeriCorps teams respond to disasters including recent tornadoes in north-central Illinois.

Nationwide hundreds of thousands of National Service members serve many millions of Americans – all on a total budget of 1.1 billion dollars currently. CNCS is one of the Federal Government’s most cost effective and impactful programs, and, in a time of cuts, it seriously needs community support like that given by Mayor’s Klipsch and Gallagher.
