IOWA CITY, IOWA (September 26, 2020) — The University of Iowa has announced the names of the 12 students named to the 2021 Homecoming Court. The UI will be celebrating homecoming virtually in 2021 with Homecoming Week officially kicking off on Monday, October 28. To review the scheduled events and activities, click HERE.
To be eligible for the Homecoming Court, students must be currently enrolled at Iowa and have attained senior status (90 or more semester hours completed). Graduate students are also eligible. Applicants must also have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00.
Applicants are judged on the following criteria:
- Involvement in UI activities and organizations;
- Academic pursuits, interests, and achievements;
- Leadership skills and abilities;
- Service to the community;
- Thoughtfulness and skill shown in response to questions; and
- Enthusiasm and sincerity.
The theme for Homecoming 2020 is "Leave your own legacy." Here's how the theme is described on the official web site for Homecoming 2020:
"The University of Iowa's history has been crafted by the legacies of the Hawkeyes that have come before us. Legendary football coach Hayden Fry left his on the field and in the spirits of those that watched his Hawkeye football team. Coach Fry modeled what it means to leave a legacy — all while uniting Hawkeyes everywhere, both on and off the field. Homecoming 2020 celebrates the legacy that you will leave with our Hawkeye community, whether it be on the field, in the classroom, or your endeavors after your time at the UI. What legacy will you leave for Hawkeyes to come? We hope you will join us in honoring Coach Fry and other great Hawkeye legacies at the University of Iowa Homecoming 2020!"
Katherine Becker, from Muscatine, Iowa [52761], is pursuing a BNS degree through the College of Nursing as well as a leadership certificate and will graduate in May 2021. During her time at Iowa, she has been a member of the University of Iowa's nationally ranked Women's Rowing Team and is an active member in ISAAC, the Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which is the voice for student athletes on campus, in the BIG10 and NCAA. Katherine has also had community and healthcare volunteer opportunities while on campus including: Dance Marathon, United Way's Day of Caring, Elementary student classroom support, Nursing Ambassador Program, reading to children in the Stead Family Children's hospital as well as supporting the Neuroscience and Palliative care units. Katherine believes the most important part of being a member of the Hawkeye community is being part of something bigger than herself, this has helped her grow every day. Besides, you can't beat the broader Hawkeye 'family'; you can be anywhere in the world and they will always enthusiastically yell, "GO HAWKS!" at the sight of the Tigerhawk.
Bridget Joers of Riverdale, Iowa [52722]: "I am a 5th year from Bettendorf, Iowa. I am majoring in Secondary English Education with a minor in ASL and an Athletic Coaching Endorsement. Over the past 5 years, I have been a part of several different student organizations and have served in different leadership positions, including a captain on the Women's Ultimate Frisbee Club Team, a Trainer at Cambus, and I currently serve as the Finance Director for Dance Marathon 27. I love being a part of the Hawkeye community because this community stretches past the University to include Iowa City as well; I love having the opportunity to work with and serve everyone in this area and do everything I can to help improve this place so many people call home. "
