Rhino Records' Handmade imprint has announced that on September 25 it will start distributing the first in a series of CDs of rare and previously unreleased music from The Doors. The recordings will mark the debut of the Bright Midnight label, owned and operated by the surviving members of the band.
More than 30 hours of music are expected to be unearthed by this new Web-only label venture, with some of the first releases including a two-CD live concert from Detroit and a four-hour radio special from 1980. ... More genre-bending hijinks are in store with next month's release of Take A Bite Out of Rhyme, a various-artist cover compilation subtitled A Rock Tribute To Rap. The Republic/Universal release features just what it says, with tracks like Run-DMC's "It's Tricky" getting waxed by the Bloodhound Gang, Eric B & Rakim's "Microphone Fiend" rocked strong by the Fun Lovin' Criminals, Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Posse on Broadway" whacked by the Insane Clown Posse, and Public Enemy's "Bring the Noise" receiving the bum rush by Staind. The CD's booklet promises an introductory essay on the blended history of rock/rap culture by Public Enemy's Chuck D. ... Joan Osborne has just launched her own woman issues oriented Web magazine ? HEROINE ? to coincide with her new Righteous Love album ? released this week on Interscope Records. The Web magazine is described as a site of inspiration for women of substance ? artists, explorers, rock stars, rebels, and saints. A new solo album from Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi is set for October release on the Divine label. The star-studded set features guests Phil Anselmo of Pantera, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Billy Idol, Peter Steele of Type O Negative, Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, Henry Rollins, and Iommi's old mate Ozzy Osbourne.
