Luke Redfield

Rozz-Tox

Wednesday, November 4, 8 p.m.

If you're reading this article hot off the (electronic) presses, folk singer/songwriter Luke Redfield's new EP Uncover the Magic - described by GoodMoMusic.net as "haunting and alluring" - will have been released less than a week ago. You also have roughly a week to commit the EP to memory before November 4 lands, when Minnesota native Redfield makes one of his early tour stops at Rock Island's Rozz-Tox. I urge you, though, to resist singing along even if you know every lyric of Uncover the Magic by heart. I made a similar mistake at a recent Wiggles concert and got such strange looks ... .

(Kidding. They haven't played here recently.)

His future recording career hinted at when he was born the son of a preacher man, Redfield gravitated toward hip hop in his teens, but has stated that exposure to albums such as Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited, Gillian Welch's Soul Journey, and Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska inspired him to lean more toward folk and blues. He taught himself guitar and, in his early 20s, spent most of 2006 busking his way through Europe, and had his first taste of professional success when a concert engagement found him opening for London-based singer/songwriter Nick Harper, a former member of Squeeze.

Returning to the U.S. the following year, Redfield embarked on his first solo tour, and during his travels between Minnesota and Texas, made the acquaintance of Willie Nelson, Kesha, and the cowboy musicians of Riders in the Sky. Months spent living in Austin, Texas, led to more months as a resident of Homer, Alaska (where he lived in a seven-by-seven dwelling he nicknamed "The Birdhouse"), which eventually led to Redfield finally returning to Minnesota and, in 2010, releasing his debut LP Ephemeral Sun to rave reviews and continuous airplay. So much for the expression "You can't go home again."

By his second LP, 2012's Tusen Takk, Redfield was collaborating with members of Bon Iver, Peter Wolf Crier, and Andrew Bird's band. By 2013, with the release of Redfield's third LP, East of Santa Fe, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune was showering him with praise for his "atmospheric" and "horizon-gazing" folk/blues stylings.

And now Redfield is more in-demand than ever, embarking on a 14-state tour in support of Uncover the Magic and inspiring adjectives such as "powerful" (GroundSounds.com), "haunting" (Boulder Weekly), and "ragged but right" (The A.V. Club). So be sure to catch Redfield during his set at Rozz-Tox, and don't let the accompanying photo deter you from leaving the house. I imagine that's a press photo suggesting the artist's Minnesota roots, and not a signal that he knows something about November 4's Quad Cities weather that we don't.

For more information on Luke Redfield's area visit, call (309)200-0978 or visit RozzTox.com.

ACTING SMART

Helpful Tips on Appearing More Intelligent Than You Actually Are

The Avett BrothersOne of the country's most acclaimed and popular Americana/folk bands will make an eagerly awaited area appearance when Davenport's Adler Theatre hosts a concert with The Avett Brothers on Tuesday, November 10. Over the 15 years since the band debuted with its self-titled EP, this internationally touring outfit has thrilled fans, peers, and critics alike - topping the Billboard charts, scoring a Grammy nomination for 2012's The Carpenter, and being lauded by the San Francisco Chronicle for boasting "the heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, and the raw energy of the Ramones."

Yet if you're new to the party but don't want to miss out on one of the area's major autumnal concert events, there are some things you should definitely know about the Avett Brothers before scoring your Adler Theatre tickets.

1) Know the members of the Avett Brothers: Although there are four full-time members of the group and three musicians who accompany them on tour, only brothers and band founders Scott and Seth Avett are related. These respective banjo and guitar players are joined by bassist Bob Crawford and cellist Joe Kwon as the official Avett Brothers lineup, while drummer Mike Marsh, pianist Paul DeFiglia, and violinist Tania Elizabeth frequently provide backup.

2) Know something about the Avett Brothers' achievements: In addition to their three-volume set of live albums, the musicians have eight additional, full-length CDs under their belts, with 2009's I & Love & You hitting number one on Billboard's folk chart, and The Carpenter and 2013's Magpie & the Dandelion both debuting in the top five of Billboard's Top 100. The Avett Brothers' talents also led Rolling Stone to name the ensemble 2009's "Artists to Watch," and to describe the group's sound as "Elton John grandeur with a Paul Westerberg rasp."

3) Know where you've seen and heard the Avett Brothers before: Frequent guests on late-night talk shows, the Avett Brothers performed "Vanity" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and a well-remembered "I & Love & You" - alongside the Brooklyn Philmarmonic - on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Their songs have also been heard on such TV series as Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, and One Tree Hill, and an original Avett Brothers composition serves as the theme song for PBS' Peabody Award-winning A Chef's Life.

4) Know how to pronounce "Avett": It's "Avett" as in "shave it," not "Avett" as in "gravity."

5) Know how to employ your knowledge in a sentence: Say to a friend, "I'm avid for the verve and vivacity of the Avetts' 'Vanity' and love Live Vol. 2 - have it?" Then say it 10 times fast ... or fewer if your embarrassed friend has walked away from you before you're finished.

The Avett Brothers' area concert begins at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are available by calling (800)745-3000 or visiting AdlerTheatre.com.

"Oh, Trudy ... ."

"We had it all one time and I'm bogged down in love with you. But I'm tired of this honky tonk life of little folks and road dogs and goin' to Sugar Hill Saturday night. I need a vacation!"

"Darlin', I'm just a long-haired country boy. A simple man. "

"Well, there's gotta be some place else in America - this land of opportunity - a good ole boy can go."

"I'm drinkin', my baby - goodbye."

"Texas?"

"Lost my cowboy hat in Dallas."

"Nebraska?"

"Spent time in a Wichita jail."

"Oh ... Atlanta!"

"The Devil went down to Georgia."

"Mississippi?"

"That powder keg?"

"Sweet home Alabama?"

"Still got the Birmingham blues."

"Way down yonder in sweet Louisiana?"

"The legend of Wooley Swamp, ya know."

"Carolina?"

"Which Carolina?"

"North?"

"Nope."

"South?"

"Nope."

"I've got it! Iowa!"

"Iowa?!"

"I hear that the legendary country and bluegrass musicians of the Charlie Daniels Band are gonna be performing at the Quad-Cities Waterfront Convention Center in Bettendorf, Iowa, on November 7! I know how much you love them!"

"Hmmm ... ."

"You're thinkin' about it - I can see it behind your eyes! If we took the midnight train and rode all night long, we'd be there by morning!"

"I guess heaven can be anywhere in my beautiful America. And it is the Charlie Daniels Band. You're on."

"Oh, my southern boy! I guess somebody was praying for me! This is so exciting! We can have whiskey ... !"

"Mmm-hmm."

" ... and of course there's the twang factor ... ."

"Mmm-hmm."

" ... and don't forget what you're gonna get from me - great big bunches of love!"

"Well, two out of three ain't bad."
