Alternative-country musician Lydia Loveless is August 23's headliner at the Rock Island Brewing Company, and as a longtime resident of the city, I'm proud to say that her list of notable performances begins and ends in Rock Island.

Don't believe me? Check out the artist's Wikipedia page: Both the first and last inclusions in the "Notable Performances" section are recording sessions that took place at Rock Island's Daytrotter studio. Now she's playing RIBCO, where she also performed in June of 2012. Loveless? Hell, we sure seem to love her!

The Devil Makes Three performs as Davenport's Redstone Room on August 13, and if you're unfamiliar with the band, AllMusic.com writes, "The trio's sound combines bluegrass, primitive country music, folk, rockabilly, Piedmont blues, and ragtime, played with a blazing post-punk attack." The Web site also states that the group's musicians "inhabit a hardscrabble working-class world full of problem drinkers, tellers of tall tales, pirates, and troublemakers." That's odd. I haven't seen them around the Reader offices ... .

Hard as it is to believe, RIBCO is celebrating its 35th anniversary this summer. In honor of the milestone, the beloved District of Rock Island venue is hosting an outdoor concert with the equally beloved party rockers of New Duncan Imperials. The traditional 35th-anniversary gift is coral. So make sure you bring some when you arrive for the band's July 26 engagement, because you can't spell "New Duncan Imperials at RIBCO" without "coral."

Ha! And people say I strain in these introductions!

Davenport's Redstone Room hosts a July 10 concert with the folk rockers of The Oh Hellos, and the duo's musicians, Tyler and Maggie Heath, are not only gifted singers/songwriters; they're brother and sister. You may know the pair from its 2012 album Through the Deep, Dark Valley, which finds the Heaths crooning together to songs such as "I Was Wrong," and "I Have Made Mistakes," and ... .

Wait a second. Are we sure they're brother and sister? 'Cause I've got one of each and they're never that nice to each other.

On July 3, Davenport's Redstone Room hosts a special evening with the alternative hip-hop and blues artists of G. Love & Special Sauce, performing in support of their recent album Sugar. On that recording, you'll find the song "Too Much Month," the band's ode to being desperately short on funds. And among its lyrics, you'll find the following: "I got too much month for the end of my money / And not enough money for the end of the month."

This is ordinarily when I'd make some crack, such as "And boy, do we Reader employees know what that's like!" But I'm angling for a raise, so the timing doesn't seem right.

This year, Father's Day lands on Sunday, June 15. And two days prior, when Minnesota-based singer/songwriter Sena Ehrhardt performs her concert at Rascals Live, she'll actually share the stage with her own dad Ed Ehrhardt, who's the guitarist for his daughter's blues ensemble the Sena Ehrhardt Band. In other words, this Father's Day, Sena will be able to give her pop the one gift all parents most want from their children: a paycheck.

It makes perfect sense that the very first musicians to play 2014's Mississippi Valley Blues Festival in LeClaire Park - which begins at 5 p.m. on July 3 - are the members of the Johnny Kilowatt Band, because this year's lineup of artists is downright electric! (Okay, granted, that's a terrible joke, but if you've been reading me for a while now, you know they can get way worse.)

On May 29, the Rock Island Brewing Company hosts an evening with musicians who, according to the UK's The Guardian, "have been blowing amps and minds for more than a decade." AllMusic.com declared that their music "rolls like sinister thunder across the landscape." And SputnikMusic.com called their most recent album "a ferocious and captivating listen that twists and turns through the deepest, darkest depths while pushing forward into new sonic territory."

Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for ... the Osmonds!

Whoops. I mean High on Fire. I keep getting those groups confused.

On May 16, the Rock Island Brewing Company presents a special concert with Laura Jane Grace, the lead vocalist of the punk-rock ensemble Against Me! who famously came out as a transgender woman in 2012. But anyone who worried that the band might have consequently softened its touch on the songs for January's Transgender Dysphoria Blues needn't fear. "Two Coffins"? "F---mylife666"? "Osama bin Laden as the Crucified Christ"? Sounds pretty damned punk to me.
